When Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) came downstairs from running Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) a bath in Tuesday (March 12)’s Emmerdale, he found that she’d vanished.

We saw previously that Charity was unable to cope with Mack fussing over her when she returned from her first therapy session and had fled.

There was certainly a lot for her to mull over following that appointment with the therapist, as Charity had realised how deep her trauma goes and how much work and time it’s going to take before she can cope comfortably with her life again. Mack, although he meant well, wasn’t giving her the mental space she needed to do that.

After finding her missing, Mack set off to look for her and eventually found her by the roadside, after her car had broken down. He was obviously relieved to see her, but she had a shock in store. She said she’d been heading back home to end their relationship.

She needed to sort herself out, she explained, and she didn’t feel safe to be around. For the first time in her life she wasn’t in control and it scared her. She told her husband, ‘We’re not good for each other. We never have been.’

Mack was devastated, but if he can’t fix people or relationships he can definitely fix cars, so he busied himself mending Charity’s car.

Eventually they realised that they were at the exact spot where they’d first met in 2020. Their first encounter by the roadside after Mack’s car broke down led to them kissing – while she was in a relationship with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick).

Mack told Charity that he loves her and always will, and headed back to his own car. She called him to wait and said sorry for her earlier words. She told him that he’s her soul mate and she wouldn’t be able to get through her current struggles without him.

‘We’re stronger together,’ he assured her, and they kissed.

Emma Atkins described these moments as ‘a lovely scene, it’s a bit like a love story.’ Despite their ups and downs, Emma was confident that Charity and Mack are good for each other.

‘I think the beauty with Charity and Mackenzie is they are not particularly destructive to one another, whenever they are together they have fun and want to make each other laugh,’ she explained.

‘There’s never a want to bring the other one down, it’s always been to big each other up. I think there’s been catastrophic events around the circumstance, Mack sleeping with Chloe, the break.

‘When you actually pinpoint it all I don’t think they’re a destructive couple, I think they are a brilliant couple. They are brilliant soap couple and think they should stay together.’
