Poppa’s House | Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Disciplinarian

Papa’s House – Episode 5 Review: “Disciplinarian”

The latest episode of Papa’s House hit close to home with its heartfelt exploration of parenting styles. Airing Thursdays on CBS (streaming Mondays on Paramount+), this show continues to deliver both laughs and emotional depth. I give this episode a solid 9/10, only missing a perfect score due to the unresolved potential romance between Dr. Reed and Pops.

In one subplot, Pops interprets Dr. Reed’s touch as flirtation, while Junior downplays it, humorously suggesting it’s merely conversational timing. The unresolved nature of this subplot hints at possible future developments, which could elevate the episode to a perfect score if revisited.

The heart of the episode lies in the strained father-son relationship between Pops and Junior. Junior’s lenient parenting style contrasts sharply with Pops’ strict discipline, reminiscent of Major Payne. The tension escalates when Junior’s son, Trey, acts out, calling him by his first name and disrespecting his mother. Pops confronts Junior about being too lenient, a direct response to his own harsh upbringing. The emotional breakthrough comes when Junior sternly disciplines Trey for disrespecting his mother, a turning point that Nina praises as tough love done right.

A humorous subplot involved Pops installing secret cameras in Junior’s house to monitor his parenting. The scene where Junior reverts to his childhood “Tony” persona for a laugh-out-loud moment was a perfect balance of levity in an otherwise emotional episode.

Meanwhile, Nina’s dynamic with her daughter Mia mirrored the main plot. Nina realizes she’s pushing Mia too hard in dance, similar to how Pops was too strict with Junior. This parallel effectively shows the balance needed in parenting—discipline tempered with love and understanding.

The chemistry between Damon and Junior is undeniable, as the real-life father and son duo bring authenticity to their roles. The writing, comedic timing, and emotional resonance all make Papa’s House a standout show, and this episode is another testament to its charm.
