EastEnders devotees have been left distraught as Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) mental health seems to have taken a turn for the worse after his generous act towards his cousin Billy (Perry Fenwick).

In Tuesday’s episode of EastEnders (January 28), Billy and Honey’s (Emma Barton) wedding plans hit a snag despite their excitement for the upcoming nuptials. The couple are set to remarry following their engagement, which came about after Honey’s successful run in the London Marathon last year.

As the big day approaches, the pair sat down to discuss their wedding arrangements, only to discover that market trader Billy had made a calculation mistake, leaving a significant gap in their budget. Phil, overhearing their conversation in The Queen Vic, decided to step in and save the day, recruiting Mo Harris (Laila Morse) to assist him.

In an unexpected move, Phil handed over his house keys to Mo to retrieve a wad of cash, instructing her to then give it to Billy and convince him to accept it.

Mo returned to the pub shortly afterwards and told Billy she’d recently met his father and her ex-lover Stevie Mitchell (Alan Ford), who’d instructed her to give Billy the money for the wedding. Phil also allowed her to keep some of the money for herself, reports Plymouth Live.

While Billy and Honey pondered whether Stevie had obtained the money legally, they ultimately chose to keep it, oblivious to the fact that Phil was their actual benefactor. Moments later, a dishevelled-looking Phil exited the pub, leading fans to speculate that his kind gesture could be a farewell gift.

EastEnders viewers have been pouring their hearts out on social media as Phil Mitchell’s storyline takes a dark turn. One fan posted: “Phil is sick proper #Eastenders. His doing all his good deeds and is going to check out early”. Another was quick to share their distress, saying: “Phil looks so sad #EastEnders.”

Another viewer chimed in with a poignant observation: “It’s actually incredibly heartbreaking to see Phil try and right some of his wrongs and get all his things in order, like helping Billy for instance, as we know his s.u.i.c.i.d.a.l thoughts most likely are already happening and he’s planning things.”

“Phil is breaking my heart pls don’t let him d.i.e #EastEnders”, urged one fan while another stated: “Phil helping Billy (secretly) has me BAWLING.”

In a shocking twist, it’s been revealed that Phil will attempt suicide in upcoming episodes, a move that is speculated to set the stage for the dramatic return of his brother Grant Mitchell, with actor Ross Kemp gearing up for a comeback.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
