Tyler Perry’s Sistas | Sneak Peek: Are The Ladies Making It Harder On Themselves To Find REAL Love?

Black Women Deserve More: Ending the Cycle of Struggle Love

In a recent discussion, Marie passionately stated, “Black women are always praising our men for doing the least while we are the most. This entire world, the entire species, was built off the backs of black women like us, right? So it’s time for us to take this struggle love and lay it to rest because love should not have to be hard.”

This sentiment resonates deeply within our community. For too long, black women have shouldered immense burdens, often celebrating men for minimal efforts while we exert ourselves tirelessly. The notion of “struggle love”—enduring hardship in relationships under the guise of loyalty—needs reevaluation. Love should be a source of joy and support, not constant struggle.

In a previous video, I highlighted the positives from a sneak peek, focusing on Marie’s conversation with Danni. We shared laughs and comedic moments, but at its core, it was about praising Danni for seeking help to address her nightmares and panic attacks. It’s encouraging to see Danni pursuing therapy, especially since it’s often stigmatized in our community. Notably, Danni received this praise from an older black individual, which is significant given that younger people in our community who opt for therapy are sometimes met with skepticism. Hearing Marie commend Danni was a beautiful moment.

However, the initial 30 seconds of this clip gave me pause. I anticipated a “black power, I Am Woman, hear me roar” speech from Marie, where she discusses how we praise men for doing the bare minimum while we do the most. Am I misinterpreting this scene? Is she suggesting that men can get by with minimal effort while black women are expected to overextend themselves?

Marie emphasizes that we need to say goodbye to struggle love because love shouldn’t be this hard. The other women respond with affirmations, and Andy snaps her fingers in agreement. As we approach Season 9, I wish the concept of accountability was more prominent. Will this sister circle focus solely on criticizing men and celebrating themselves? Marie, having been married multiple times, might not have the most credible perspective to add to this conversation. The collective “amen” from the group feels reminiscent of certain podcasts where the narrative is either about men being “high value” or women being told they don’t need men to be successful.

Marie delivers her lines powerfully, as expected from the actress. I’m curious about the dialogue she has in store for the other women. This particular clip focuses on Danni, and I can’t help but wonder if Marie fully comprehends the situations. Does she have only partial information about the hardships the women face? Did Andy or Pam inform Marie about the poor choices some of the women have made? For instance, Sabrina had an African prince and let him go. Karen was involved with a well-off pastor who divorced his wife due to infidelity, but she dismissed him to pursue her ex, who is now with Fatima. It seems these aspects aren’t addressed; instead, the focus is on the narrative that women are wronged, love is hard, and men are at fault.

The group’s consensus that love shouldn’t be hard is valid, but it’s essential to recognize the role of personal choices. Marie mentions letting go of love and doing better, a theme that arises once a season when the women gather. Andy often declares that they deserve better and need to move on from unsatisfactory men, yet she’s the first to return to Gary, leading to her current predicament. Marie asserts that women built the world, yet in their context, a man, Robin, leads the law firm. When the partners removed Andy from the board, she felt entitled to reclaim her position, but perhaps that’s not her right.

I’m eager to delve deeper into this scene and will share more thoughts during the live stream tonight. Please like and subscribe, and let me know your thoughts. It seems Marie might be encouraging the women, but will they take action or revert to old patterns?
