BBC D.e.a.t.h in Paradise fans cry ‘can’t get rid of him’ as they ‘work out’ character exit
D.e.a.t.h in Paradise was back on Friday night with a new m.u.r.d.e.r for the team to solve.
Fans of D.e.a.t.h in Paradise have been left devastated as it appears the show has hinted at Selwyn Patterson’s departure, played by Don Warrington.
In the series’ latest opening episode that aired last week, JP Hooper (portrayed by Tobi Bakare) broke the news to the Commissioner that his role was getting axed, a revelation that didn’t sit well with anyone.
Don has portrayed Selwyn since the show’s inception, sharing the screen with each of the central investigating characters, most recently rubbing shoulders with Mervin Wilson, brought to life by Don Gilet.
But in the latest episode, a conversation between Selwyn and Catherine (Elizabeth Bourgine) hinted at changes afoot for his character.
“Selwyn, JP just called and told me about your job and that they’re phasing it out,” Catherine disclosed. “I knew something wasn’t right about you. But they can’t do this,” reports the Mirror.
Catherine stood her ground, stating, “But we need you here,” and pressed on, “The island needs you, so what are you going to do? “.
Selwyn offered a simple yet uncertain: “I don’t know.”
This potential exit has left viewers expressing their sorrow online, fearing the beloved character might be written off the show.
Heading to a Facebook fan page, one viewer lamented: “Without the Commissioner, there is no D.e.a.t.h in Paradise.'”
Another viewer expressed dismay with an emotional emoji: “Oh no, it wouldn’t be the same without Selwyn.”
Yet another chimed in anxiously: “They better not get rid of Selwyn.”
“No, the Commissioner is one of the most interesting characters,” another person contributed. “I want to know more about him, not see him being shipped off.”
One more viewer implored, “They can’t get rid of Serlwyn! He is so much more than the Commissioner.”
Yet another expressed their outrage, declaring, “Nooo, they can’t get rid of him, the worst decision ever.”
Addressing his character’s future in the series and the Commissioner’s reaction to imminent changes, Don revealed, “It’s shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently.”
Further discussing with the Mirror, he elaborated: “It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn, and that’s always the joy of playing a character like him – there are so many different sides to him.
“You think you know about somebody, but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming into bloom.”
D.e.a.t.h in Paradise returns next Friday at 9pm on BBC One.
