Caleb Miligan (William Ash) turned as white as a sheet in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale as he realised – to his horror – that wife Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly) has indeed slept with his brother Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).

The possibility of this betrayal being true has been niggling away in Caleb’s mind for a good few weeks now. During his showdown with Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day), Caleb was taken aback when the s.e.x abuser said Ruby and Cain had slept together.

Because Caleb was holding a gun, he assumed it was Anthony’s desperate attempt at a distraction.

With Anthony dead, Caleb has been left a paranoid mess, watching Ruby and Cain’s every move to see if he could work out if Anthony was telling the truth.

In tonight’s episode, Steph (Georgia Jay) arrived home after attending an appointment at the doctors.

Attempting to find a balance between not wanting to pry and proving he can have a conversation about women’s health, Caleb tried to ask Steph if everything was okay, but then jumped to a conclusion and wondered if she’s pregnant.

Steph said no, and also informed her dad that she’s been on contraception most of her adult life.

To Steph, this comment didn’t mean a great deal but to Caleb – it changed absolutely everything. We were then reminded of a scene that aired a couple of months ago, which saw Caleb tell Ruby that he had found the morning after p.i.l.l in the bin.

Because this happened hours after Ruby and Cain slept together, she covered and said it probably belonged to Steph.

Back in present day, the revelation hit Caleb like a tonne of bricks – Anthony was telling the truth.

Instead of confronting Cain immediately, Caleb decided to wait. In the pub, he caught his brother out in another lie when Cain said he hadn’t seen Ruby for a few days, knowing Steph saw them together earlier that day.

Simmering with rage, the comment was enough to confirm to Caleb that his brother is on the edge and panicking about keeping his secret.

Before the week ends, Cain and Caleb will find themselves involved in a limo crash – but will Caleb deliberately swerve the vehicle in an attempt to get revenge on his brother?

‘When the event in question happened between Cain and Ruby instantly I think they both regretted it’, Jeff Hordley told us.

‘They came together at a point where they needed to do something crazy and seek solace in a physical way because of where they were – Cain because of the stuff that had been going on with Belle, with Zak, and with Moira. He was in a terrible place. And Ruby likewise with her father.

‘Then as soon as it happened it was like, ‘s***, we can’t talk about this, we never mention this ever again, this was a mistake.’

He added: ‘It creates further avenues to explore for Caleb and Cain. One minute you think they’re going to be great brothers and they’re on the same wavelength and there for each other.

‘The next minute they absolutely hate each other and they want to k.i.l.l each other. That’s good.’
