If you’ve ever watched Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise, you’ll know that while the show’s murder mysteries are gripping, the real star is its breath-taking backdrop. And what you might not realise is that the fictional island of Saint Marie is actually Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory in the Caribbean.

With its turquoise waters, lush rainforests, and sun-soaked beaches, it’s no wonder producers chose this picture perfect to spot to film in. Located in the Lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is made up of several islands, with the two main ones being Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre which form the shape of a butterfly.

The cheapest place to travel from if you’re heading to the holiday destination from the UK is London, where you can fly from £281 in April to the commune of Pointe-à-Pitre which is located in Guadeloupe. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here

Despite being a part of France, it has a distinct Caribbean identity. Although, the currency is the Euro, the official language is French, and you’ll likely find fresh baguettes alongside traditional Creole dishes being served around the area as well.

For fans of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise, you’ll definitely recognise a few things from key scenes while you’re there. The show’s police station is filmed in the small village of Deshaies on Basse-Terre. This doubles as Honoré which is the island’s capital in the series, and is home to Catherine’s Bar where the team often winds down after solving a case.

In real life, the bar is actually a restaurant called Le Madras, where you can sip a rum punch with the same sea view seen on screen. Other filming spots include the stunning beaches of Plage de la Perle and Anse de la Grande Anse, frequently used for crime scenes (because if you must solve a murder, you might as well do it somewhere beautiful).

The lush rainforest of Guadeloupe National Park also features in the show, but whether you’re a die-hard Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise fan just wanting a tropical getaway, Guadeloupe is well worth a visit.
