EastEnders will air some heartbreaking scenes next week as Martin Fowler is laid to rest. Martin – played by James Bye – d.i.e.d in the harrowing Queen Vic explosion, just as him and Stacey Slater finally realised their true feelings for one another.

Lily Slater, Stacey’s eldest daughter, has been seen struggling as of late over the loss of Martin. Martin is the father of Arthur Fowler and Hope Fowler but Lily isn’t Martin’s biological daughter, which was cruelly pointed out by Tommy Moon in a recent episode.

Lily is the daughter of Stacey and her ex Ryan Malloy, but Martin did adopt her at a young age and thus she saw him as her father. Sadly, Martin lost his life in the Queen Vic explosion caused by Reiss Colwell crashing his car into the building.

Ryan Malloy made his first appearance in the soap back in April 2009 and, after a brief fling, she ended up falling pregnant with baby Lily. Whitney Dean’s brother Ryan later agreed to be a father to Lily and wants to be in her life.

He made a brief return back in 2023 for Lily’s pregnancy after his sister Whitney told him what had happened. Ryan was desperate for Lily to go back with him to live in Wakefield with him and his wife, but later Stacey finds out that Ryan’s wife can’t have kids and that is part of his intention for getting Lily and the baby to come and live with them.

In a row between the pair, Ryan told Stacey: “It’s no wonder she ended up pregnant, you’ve had three kids by three different dads,” and Lily overheard, ordering her dad to leave. He hasn’t been seen since he told them he was going to cut down Lily’s maintenance.

Previously, James Bye opened up about his exit from EastEnders as Martin d.i.e.d in tragic scenes for the 40th anniversary.

Speaking about his exit, James said: “Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the shows epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right. It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude.

“A huge thank you to all the fans of the show – EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you – and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years. This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.”
