Emmerdale’s Kate Hill shares star’s ‘ulterior motive’ in ‘childish’ rivalry
The Sarah Sugden actress finds herself caught between a battle of egos in the Dales
Emmerdale star Katie Hill opened up about Cain Dingle having an “ulterior motive” as Kammy and Jacob battle to win Sarah’s affections.
In upcoming episodes, Jacob and Kammy decide to compete against each other in a dirt bike race – even though Sarah announces her distaste towards the idea.
Kammy joined the ITV soap last month and made an instant impression on Sarah who was heartbroken after Jacob decided to call things off with her while grieving his mum, Leyla Harding.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News and other press, Katie shared: “I think she knows obviously they don’t like each other that much because of the situation and she’s not too happy about that because obviously she still views Jacob as a friend, but I think right now she’s quite oblivious to how serious the rivalry actually is.
“I don’t think she’s too happy, she would rather they could be friends, but she’s still not aware of the full extent of what’s going on between them both.”
As Sarah finds out about the race, she tells Kammy that if he chooses to go ahead with it they will be over. Katie added: “I think she is quite serious about it because she’s thinking a lot at the moment how she doesn’t really have the time to be messing around with boys who behave in the way Kammy sort of is and doing childish things, like this race. So I think she’s quite serious about it and she just doesn’t want it to go ahead.”
Katie Hill joined the Leeds-based soap in 2017 to take on the role of Sarah Sugden as Emmerdale wanted to tackle a more mature storyline that looked at her being diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia.
During the battle of the boys, both Charity and Cain involve themselves as they back either of the lads. Katie revealed: “Both Cain and Charity are involved, as there is a sort of competition going on between Cain and Charity as well, because Charity is backing Jacob and Cain is sort of backing in Kammy, but I think Cain has also got a bit of an ulterior motive that he just wants to annoy Charity.
“So they are quite involved in it. Charity is the one that’s setting it up and egging Jacob along which I don’t think Sarah will be too happy to find out.”
As Kammy celebrates his win, Katie confirmed that Sarah is “really unimpressed with him” and worried for Jacob as he crashed his bike.
The actress continued: “Yeah, she’s really worried – particularly after everything he has gone through with losing his mum to a car crash. She’s well aware that this will, have shaken him up.”
In terms of the potential of Sarah and Jacob reuniting, Katie said: “I think they would need to have a good long conversation about what actually happened with them and their relationship.
“I think it would be nice for both of them to open up to each other because deep down they both still have got feelings for each other and they went through such a lot together. But I think they need to have a proper conversation to communicate everything that went on because they still haven’t had that closure.”
Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
