Emmerdale ‘confirms’ icon’s return 39 years after first episode – and it’s bad news for John
Emmerdale viewers are convinced that a former soap legend will be returning to the village in time for Aaron Dingle and John Sugden's wedding - but it will end in tragedy
Emmerdale has hinted at the potential return of a soap legend, spelling trouble for John Sugden.
John, played by Oliver Farnworth, made his first soap appearance last year as the alleged long-lost son of Jack Sugden (Clive Hornby), quickly making waves in the Dales.
The enigmatic doctor has since found his place in the village and built relationships with his newfound family members, including sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins). He also popped the question to Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
However, a recent plot twist revealed John’s dark past, showing viewers that he was behind the d.e.a.t.h of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter).
But there’s more – the soap also unveiled that John was the mastermind behind setting up Ella Forster (Paula Lane) and drugged future mother-in-law Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter).
Given his unstable and dangerous behaviour, fans have expressed their worries for Aaron, especially as the couple are planning their wedding, reports Leicestershire Live.
In Tuesday’s episode (April 15), Chas was firm in her decision not to marry Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) next month, following the recent turmoil involving Liam’s ex-partner Ella.
Chas’s decision to put her wedding on hold meant she couldn’t reclaim her deposit from the venue, but Aaron stepped in with a money-saving solution, suggesting he and John could use her original date. However, when Aaron shared the idea with John, it left him less than pleased.
Now, Emmerdale enthusiasts are buzzing with speculation that John and Aaron’s upcoming nuptials next month might coincide with the dramatic comeback of a soap icon. Fans on an Emmerdale Facebook fan page have been sharing their predictions, with many convinced that Aaron’s former flame Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley) will make an explosive return to disrupt the ceremony.
“Aaron and John getting married next month. Calling it now this is when Robert comes back,” one fan posted. Another chimed in with support: “Yup he can return and stop the wedding!” A third fan confidently stated: “I’ve said this since they got engaged, perfect timing.” While another added thoughtfully: “I hope so!”.
The relationship between Robert and Aaron was a standout storyline, capturing viewers’ hearts since their romance began in 2015 and leading up to their marriage in 2018. But the love story took a turn when Rob was incarcerated in 2019 for the d.e.a.t.h of Lee Posner (portrayed by Kris Mochrie).
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
