The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.

John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) has shown his true colours to Caleb Miligan (William Ash) in Emmerdale, desperate to do something about Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley).

Robert was released from prison towards the end of last week. He immediately made his way to the village, and announced to an unimpressed John and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) that he was back to spend more time with his family.

It was very obvious that Robert was there for other reasons as well though. Prior to his release, Robert was visited by John, and grew concerned when his distant brother threatened him.

Robert tried to tell Vic Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) that she needs to stay away from John, but she refused to listen, convinced her brother was just saying these things out of jealousy.

During Robert’s first full day in the village, he attempted to get a new job at Caleb’s depot. The businessman gave him a chance and offered Robert a trial, and didn’t really care that it annoyed John and Aaron.

In tonight’s episode, Robert was late to his trial, but made up for it by discussing business contacts with Caleb.

During his lunch break, Caleb opened the door to John. He was still expressing his annoyance about Robert being around, and told Caleb that he can’t work with him.

Because John couldn’t actually give Caleb a real reason why he didn’t want Robert present, he resorted to blackmail. He told Caleb that he owes him, given he helped cover up Anthony Fox’s murder earlier this year.

To Caleb, it was a low move but to us, it was just classic John. Without any choice, Caleb spun a story that ultimately ended Robert’s trial at the depot.

After a comment from Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) though, Robert realised that Caleb was lying about not needing him.

Outside on the street, Robert confronted John about his interfering. The Sugden brothers attempted to fight, but their confrontation was broken up by Vic.

John was left raging as the episode ended. As far as he’s concerned, Robert needs to disappear and in upcoming episodes, he’ll show that he’s prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.
