Emmerdale fans have been scratching their heads for months now in a bid to work out the identity of the mysterious Ella Forster (Paula Lane), who is quite clearly harbouring a big secret.

As any fan of the genre knows, soap law decrees that newcomers with absolutely zero connection to their eponymous dwelling – not to mention those who get shady when quizzed about their pasts – are not to be trusted!

Ella is the latest example in a long line of characters who turned out to be hiding something major, with viewers desperate to figure out what exactly it is that she’s keeping to herself.

From her penchant to manipulate the situation to her advantage, to her innate desire for issuing advice to people who didn’t particularly ask for it – not to mention her obsession with Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) – it’s quite clear that this is character with ulterior motives.

With Ella having been present during several conversations in which serial killer Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) – who terrorised the village in 2021 – received a mention, viewers are now convinced that Ella has some sort of connection to the crazed psychopath.

I myself wasn’t wholly convinced on such a theory – that is until the latest mention of Meena, which saw Ella flee Tenants cottage as soon as the murderer’s name was brought up in conversation.

Ella had spent the night with Liam, whose daughter Leanna (Mimi Slinger) was murdered by Meena, and the two were all loved up the following morning – until the mention of lunatic Meena, which caused the receptionist to make tracks at record speed, leaving Liam utterly baffled.

This certainly seems to indicate a connection between the two characters and, after wracking my brains, I fear I might have solved the mystery.

Emmerdale fans might recall that, prior to her arrival in the village, Meena had claimed another victim by the name of Nadine Butler, who was her so-called best friend.

Nadine was a nurse, much like Meena, with the two characters presumably having met through their profession.

Meena, however, murdered Nadine when she broke away from her manipulation and made other friends, with Nadine’s sister Carol telling Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Parker) that Meena controlled every aspect of her sibling’s life prior to her death.

But what relevance is this to Ella, you might be asking right about now? Well, hear me out, could Ella perhaps have been a friend of Nadine’s?

The new village receptionist presumably has some interest in medicine given that she now works at the local GP’s office, not to mention that her previous job saw her working as a PA for a manager of a veterinary practice, so it’s very possible that she crossed paths with Meena and, by association, Nadine at some stage.

What’s more, she’s also taken an interest in both Manpreet – Meena’s sister – and Liam – whose daughter was killed by Meena -so, whatever the connection, it’s clear that there is one to Meena and Nadine seems like the likely option.

The question is: if this does prove to the case, then is Ella out for information on her friend? Is she simply biding her time in a bid to find out some of the backstory on what happened to Nadine? Or is there another, more sinister, motive at play here?

Fans are set to get some answers next week, with Ella forced to move in with Liam after it’s discovered that she’s been sleeping in her car – and a photo of hers becomes the subject of much discussion after she reacts strangely when Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) looks at it.

Perhaps that will shed more light on the mystery but, either way, I firmly believe that I’m on to something with Nadine.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
