Emmerdale star confirms reason why major couple broke up – but reunion is not off the cards

Life changed forever for Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) earlier this year in Emmerdale when his son Ethan (Emile John) died suddenly.

Prior to this, Ethan was the victim of a hit and run in an act of revenge orchestrated by Ruby (Beth Cordingly). A few weeks beforehand, Ethan left Ruby’s son Nicky (Lewis Cope) to die after being involved in a car crash themselves.

Ethan survived Ruby’s hit and run but collapsed and died as a result of a brain aneurysm just days later. At first, Ruby believed her actions caused Ethan to die, but a post-mortem confirmed that wasn’t the case.

Understandably, Charles spiralled in the aftermath of losing his son in such a shocking way. As a result of the grief and high emotion, his relationship with Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) started to be seriously impacted.

And once Charles realised Manpreet wasn’t keen on committing to a longer-term relationship, he ended it.

Pondering over these recent scenes, actor Kevin Mathurin recently told us whether his character and Manpreet could ever reunite.

‘There’s always going to be love there’, he said at this year’s Inside Soap Awards.

‘I think so much has happened between those two characters and they know each other inside out. But because of the turbulent year that Charles has had, I think a break is needed because it’s been so traumatic. He needs to focus on his faith. If it belongs or was meant for you, it will be for you.’

To literally all of our surprise, Charles is currently in the middle of a fling with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy).

Laurel found herself spending time with Charles and Claudette (Flo Wilson) to help with organising the harvest festival.

She had some thoughts about the celebrations which Charles and his mum considered to be a bit radical for the genteel parishioners of Emmerdale.

Despite the setbacks, Laurel pushed ahead with the plan, which left Charles very unhappy.

At Woodbine, during a showdown, Laurel and Charles argued over their harvest festival decisions. In a classic soap moment though, their anger and hatred for each other quickly turned to passion.

‘Laurel! I can’t say anything’, Kevin laughed, discussing this storyline.

‘Because one, I don’t know, and two, I want to leave it open for the fans. I don’t want to spoil it for people. That whole storyline came out of absolute surprise for me. I kind of enjoyed it. No, I really enjoyed it. Working with Charlotte, she’s a fantastic actress. We just had fun.

‘I know Charles will never compare to St. Ashley so when I knew that was happening I was really stressed and nervous about it. I think it’s gone really well so we’ll see what happens.’
