Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise has unveiled a gripping teaser for its upcoming 14th series.

The widely popular BBC One detective series returns to screens later this month, introducing Don Gilet as DI Mervin Wilson, the new lead detective.

Mervin was first seen in the show’s Christmas special, where his trip to the Caribbean to meet his mother for the first time took a sad turn in true show style.

After solving the ‘who shot the Santas?’ mystery and learning about his estranged mother’s demise, Mervin is set to head back home, ready to leave the island behind in the upcoming series, reports the Express.

The newly released trailer on Friday, 24 January, hints: “There maybe a new detective in town… but it’s business as usual in paradise!” as Mervin makes his debut.

However, a shocking revelation is dropped in the first look when it’s revealed: “My mother, I don’t think her Dᴇᴀᴛʜ was an accident!”

A synopsis teases: “With the opportunity to learn more about his mother’s life, Mervin begins to discover things may not be all that they seem in Saint Marie. As everything he thought he knew unravels, will his life ever be the same again?”

EastEnders star Don, 58, opened up about his role as the new detective Mervin, teasing the drama that’s in store: “Mervin must learn to deal with his mother’s Dᴇᴀᴛʜ . He constantly goes from trying to move on to trying to figure it out exactly what might have happened again, if anything at all. Then he’s also got these cases to solve on a regular basis, he’s got his job to do.”

He further hinted at the gripping narrative ahead: “It’s great how the story has been written and unravels. There’s a possibility that there might have been some suspicious circumstances related to her Dᴇᴀᴛʜ , but we don’t know for sure. The question is can he juggle the personal with the professional? Can he get the job done or will it become too much for him?”

This exciting development follows as Ralf Little bowed out of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise last year. His character Neville Parker decided he needed to go travelling and explore the world. Now, it’s time for a new detective with Mervin leading the show.
