Death in Paradise

BBC Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise Selwyn Patterson’s future confirmed ahead of final episode

Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise fans were left saying the same thing as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson learnt his fate in the BBC show.

This month, viewers of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise were in for a shock when they discovered that the beloved Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington), was facing redundancy amidst budget cuts within Saint Marie’s police force.

The drama intensified last week on BBC when fans saw an emotional handover as Selwyn met his successor, the young and conceited Sterling Fox (Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge). With Sterling shaking things up among the team, it looked increasingly like Selwyn’s departure was sealed in the latest episode.

On Friday night, Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet), was investigating the mysterious Dᴇᴀᴛʜ of Dorna (Judith Jacob), unconvinced by reports claiming his mother perished at sea.

In contrast, the unconcerned Sterling doubted any foul play and abruptly instructed DI Wilson to close his mother’s investigation. During the episode, Selwyn received an urgent visit from Mayor Catherine Bordey (Élizabeth Bourgine), who was adamant that he could aid Mervin in keeping the inquiry active, reports the Express.

However, Catherine was undeterred, countering with a pointed: “50 years of service to this island and now you can just walk away? Not care anymore?”

He admitted that his indifference might be the only way he can cope with his current situation. Before parting ways, Catherine imparted some words of wisdom, stating: “Is that really how you want this all to end? By turning your back on everything you used to stand for? Selwyn, Mervin came to Saint Marie looking for answers, if he has to leave without finding them, then this island has et him down.”

Her words seemed to resonate with him as he was later seen donning his uniform and heading to the station to have Mervin’s case reopened in an unconventional manner. He informed Sterling that he intended to arrest him for damaging his car, thereby buying the force an extra day to unravel the mystery surrounding Mervin’s mother’s Dᴇᴀᴛʜ .

Ultimately, the team cracked the case using old letters Dorna had penned to Mervin’s father. Initially, it was assumed she had perished at sea, but the team made an arrest after discovering she was murdered by her old friends Roy Palmer (Gerard Horan) and Brianna (Joy Richardson).

As the episode drew to a close, Sterling informed Mervin that upon his return to Jamaica, he would be discussing his arrest with the Chief Commissioner.

However, Mervin had a different perspective, stating: “With respect Mr Fox, I’d like to point out that if we did things your way a man guilty of murder would be walking free right now. Which I’m sure the Chief Commissioner would be very interested to hear. You know what would fix this Sterling?

“When you go back to Jamaica, you tell your boss that to avoid any more mistakes like this being made by your good self, he needs to reinstate the commissioner.”

Selwyn informed the DI that there was no need for him to intervene on his behalf, but Mervin felt otherwise, expressing: “I wish I could have done more, if it wasn’t for you, today wouldn’t have happened.”

The anticipation among viewers soared as a teaser for the upcoming episode hinted at Selwyn being offered his position back.

Fans took to Twitter to express their excitement. One viewer exclaimed: “YES SELWYN! Definitely just shouted at my TV in excitement.” Another shared their enthusiasm, commenting: ” Yes Selwyn is back!”

Another tweet praised the character, stating: “Selwyn has always been the best character.” Someone else wrote: “Well best news of the year #DeathInParadise and hopefully the Commissioner is staying in paradise again another well written show.”
