BBC viewers have slammed the latest episode of D.e.a.t.h in Paradise, with some claiming the long-running murder mystery series has “run its course.”

Fans tuned in to watch the Saint Marie crime squad investigate the latet unexplained murder of a young woman on Friday (February 14), who was initially believed to have died from a peanut allergy.

However, as the fourteenth season’s newest episode unfolded, it was confirmed that Don Warrington, who has played Commissioner Selwyn Patterson since the show’s inception, would be departing.

In the latest storyline, Commissioner Patterson faced an unexpected career shake-up, after he was informed that his position is being “phased out” due to budget cuts.

It didn’t take long before fans flooded to social media to share their concerns surrounding his departure online. Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – one user penned: “Not sure #deathinparadise will survive without Selwyn.”

Another penned: “No D.e.a.t.h in Paradise without Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. He’s the heart of the show!” More chimed in, adding: “If Selwyn leaves, I’m done. He’s been there since the start and it won’t be the same without him,” and: “I swear if the Commissioner leaves, I’ll riot. This is the worst decision ever.”

Others pleaded for the BBC to rethink the storyline, with one viewer saying: “They better not get rid of Selwyn! He’s such an interesting character and brings so much to the show.”

Doc Martin star Martin Clunes is the bookmaker’s favourite to join the D.e.a.t.h in Paradise cast when Selwyn Patterson actually leaves Saint Marie.

Other big names thrown into the mix include Danny John-Jules, who played Dwayne Myers in D.e.a.t.h in Paradise. The officer last appeared in the 2024 Christmas special, and fans also hope he makes a return.

Sara Martins, who played Camille Bordey, is another favourite to return. Camille, who recently had a baby, is often mentioned in the series by her mother, Catherine (Elizabeth Bourgine).

Viewers were already aware that Selwyn’s job was under threat due to funding cuts, with the commissioner being summoned to Jamaica earlier this season, where he was told that he was risk of redundancy.

But some fans think there may be a chance the star will remain on the show.

“I’m getting so worried for Selwyn. I’m sure they’ll end up saving his job at the last minute but seeing him like this is upsetting. I need someone to go to the HQ in Jamaica and do something,” one fan gushed on X, and: “We are not letting Selwyn go.”
