BBC EastEnders’ Sonia leaves fans ‘screaming’ as they spot distracting detail during live episode
EastEnders' Sonia Fowler gave birth to a baby girl during the live 40th anniversary episode
EastEnders has wrapped up a dramatic week celebrating its 40th anniversary with a heart-wrenching live episode that ended in a tragic twist. Fans were caught off guard as k.i.l.l.e.r accountant Reiss Colwell (played by Jonny Freeman) met his demise on Wednesday when he was k.i.l.l.e.d by falling rubble and a bathtub during the collapse.
In the midst of the chaos, Sonia Fowler (portrayed by Natalie Cassidy) faced labour pains in the kitchen, while Martin Fowler (actor James Bye) was pinned down by a fallen steel beam after the catastrophic explosion.
In the Thursday episode (February 20), viewers were taken back to the tense scenario at The Queen Vic post-explosion where life and d.e.a.t.h hung in a delicate balance. Sonia’s anguish intensified as her child’s birth loomed, and Bianca Jackson (played by Patsy Palmer) alongside Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) did everything possible for a safe childbirth under dire circumstances.
Amidst excruciating torment, Sonia’s delivery brought about a terrifying moment where she appeared to collapse just moments after the baby’s arrival. With Bianca holding the newborn and no sign of life from the little one, they witnessed Sonia struggling to recuperate from the ordeal.
A desperate scene unfolded as Bianca and Lauren urged Sonia to intervene and save her “dying baby”, but relief came as Sonia somehow summoned the strength to assist, culminating in the newborn’s cry, reports Plymouth Live.
Eventually, rescuers made it to the site, ensuring that Sonia and her new daughter could be securely escorted to an ambulance. However, some fans were preoccupied by another detail — Sonia’s intense birthing cries were likened by viewers to “opera singing” as she welcomed her daughter Julia into the world.
On X, viewers were left gobsmacked by the unexpected turn of events in EastEnders, with one person commenting: “Sonia singing opera while giving birth was not on my bingo card for this year #EastEnders #EELive.”
Another was equally surprised, saying: “I thought Sonia was singing opera for a second! #EastEnders #EastEnders40.”
A third added their voice to the mix, exclaiming: “AM SCREAMING THAT SWITCH FROM MARTIN DYING TO SONIA OPERA SINGING #EastEnders #EastEnders40.”
The scene also prompted another fan to remark: “Not Sonia’s screams giving opera singing #EastEnders40 #EastEnders”, while yet another viewer couldn’t contain their reaction: “Omg I’m screaming why is Sonia singing opera while giving birth? #EastEnders #EELive.”
EastEnders airs Monday – Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer
