Beyond Paradise’s latest episode saw the end of DS Esther Williams’ budding romance with villain Archie Hughes.

The pair’s blossoming relationship has been rumbling on throughout the current series of the BBC drama. However, Esther – who is played by Zahra Ahmadi – decided to put a stop to it in the instalment that aired on Friday, 25 April.

Walking up to Archie at his winery, she told him: “I don’t want to do this anymore.”

Earlier in the series, Archie and Esther got chatty at a party for Archie’s new winery, and they ended up having a one night stand. After waking up in the wine dealer’s bed in the morning, the police officer crept home and kept quiet about what had happened.

They also had a drink together where they discussed why they were both single. However, Esther didn’t seem that impressed when Archie (played by Jamie Bamber) suggested it was because of work and told him it was a “cop out”.

They bumped into each other again this week, as Esther accompanied her boss Humphrey (Kris Marshall) to a village meeting after some strange incidents at a local farm. But when she saw Archie she gave him the brush off.

He later called her and she told him: “I am sorry about earlier, I was just in work mode and didn’t quite know how to handle that.” “Could always tell people, make life a lot easier,” he suggested.

“What happened to just living in the moment instead of trying to put a label on things?” she asked. “I’m all for living in the moment but I am not sure we should have to hide while we do it – we are not 12 years old,” he pointed out.

However, Esther said it was “not that simple” as she had yet to tell her daughter Zoe about them. When Archie suggested they tell Zoe together, Esther made an excuse to get off the phone.

However, she later walked to the winery and told him it was over.

“I don’t want to do this anymore,” she said. “Do what?” Archie asked. “Us,” she replied.

Archie asked whether they could talk about it, but she turned and walked away, leaving him staring after her.

Elsewhere, Humphrey investigated a string of odd events at a local farm. Father and daughter George and Stella Ellis had their milk sabotaged, a fire was set at their property and somebody released their cows onto a road.

The only suspect was a mysterious “corn man” who appeared at the farm when the milk was spilled and who was seen strolling away from the hay fire in the field.

It looked as if it was down to a feud with another local farm, although everyone there had an alibi. Then adding to the mystery was the fact that Stella had once been in a relationship with the daughter of the rival farm owner.

Beyond Paradise next airs at 8pm on BBC One on Friday, 2 May.
