Beyond Paradise returned to BBC One with a dramatic scone showdown, that sparked the age old debate – jam or cream first?

Kris Marshall and Zahra Ahmadi star in the Death in Paradise spin-off set one the Devon coast, as police partners DI Humphrey Goodman and DS Esther Williams. The opening episode of series three opened with a body being found in a river on the border between Devon and Cornwall.

This meant the Cornish police were also called in to investigate and a joint investigation was agreed. There was high tension between the Beyond Paradise characters and their rivals and this only increased when they met at Humphrey’s girlfriend Sally’s cafe and ordered scones.

Comedian Steve Oram appeared as Cornish police officer DI Jacob Tremayne with Changing Ends Gabby Best as his partner DS Fenella Foster. Sitting down to discuss the case at The Ten Mile Kitchen, DI Tremayne ordered scones.

As the two men began to discuss the case, DS Williams and DS Foster began a fierce battle with the jam and cream posts, furiously spinning the pots around, cutting open their scones and dolloping on the toppings – for Cornish Foster jam first, and for Williams, the Devon way of cream first.

Hugh Dennis was a guest on the show as local councillor Arthur Donalan, partner of the murder victim and the main suspect.

And Jamie Bamber returned as Archie Hughes, who made a bid to get back into Sally’s life by asking her to cater for his winery opening. At first Sally tried to refuse, but in the end she agreed. At the end of the episode, when Humphrey turned up at the party he laughed: “Last time I saw you, we were rolling around on the sea front.” As the two raised their fists and pretended to spar with one another Humphrey punched love rival Archie right in the nose. He then gasped: “I’m so sorry. I really didn’t mean to.” Archie shook himself and said: “No it’s alright, I probably deserved that for ruining your date night.”

Then Archie approached Esther and it appeared romance could be on the cards as he turned his charms on her.

Afterwards Archie then took Humphrey and Sally upstairs to a private room lit by fairy lights and candles. He told them: “I’m not sure what you had planned for your date night, but this is the best I could do at such short notice.” But their date was cut short when they were called to meet foster child Hannah.

Beyond Paradise continues on BBC One at 8pm on Fridays.
