Beyond Paradise’s Humphrey and Martha face childcare juggle in exclusive clip
The couple are faced with the realities of being busy working parents in the latest episode of the BBC One drama.
Beyond Paradise’s Humphrey and Martha will face a childcare juggle familiar to many a working parent in the latest episode of the hit BBC One drama.
Humphrey (Kris Marshall) and Martha (Sally Bretton) have fostered a daughter, Rosie, this series, but while their dreams of becoming parents look to be coming true, they’ve faced a baptism of fire with sleepless nights and now trying to cover childcare while they are at work.
With Martha rushed off her feet at the restaurant and Humphrey facing more crime than you might expect in their idyllic corner of the world, finding someone to look after Rosie while she waits for a school place is not easy.
A first-look clip ahead of Friday’s episode sees a harassed Martha saying: “I’ll ask mum to look after Rosie while I’m at the suppliers. Things will get easier once we find her a school place.”
Humphrey asks: “Have you heard back?” but she replies: “No, not yet. I’ll chase them again tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Martha’s mum Anne (Barbara Flynn) overhears them talking but doesn’t seem overly keen to step up to grandma duties as she asks: “Hm, what’s in it for me?”
Martha jokes: “My eternal love and affection,” and Anne sets out her terms, saying: “Does that come in the form of a deliciously home cooked dinner?”
How is Martha and Humphrey’s fostering journey going?
Ahead of Beyond Paradise season three starting, the cast spoke to Yahoo UK on the set of the show and explained the adjustment to family life that they would be facing.
Bretton said: “They’re finding out what family looks like for them so they continue on their fostering journey, they foster a little girl who comes into their life. Martha opens up new premises, so she’s juggling quite a lot. They’re juggling a lot between them in that sort of frantic way. Working, home life. But they are very solid together.”
Marshall adds. “(Humphrey’s) always busy, he’s got a 100% crime solved rate so he’s always got something going on. (Martha’s) becoming more and more busy with her business, and they’re taking on more with their first fostering journey, so there are challenges for them again. But they are strong.”
However, viewers will know that the couple haven’t necessarily faced the easiest fostering journey – something that Marshall thinks is important to be realistic about.
The show star told Yahoo UK: “They’re getting a bit deeper into that, and the tumult and both positive and negative ramifications of being a foster parent, you know? In attachment and everything that comes with it, the gamut of emotions that they feel.
“They’re definitely getting much further into that whole fostering journey and the ramifications of dealing with kids, kids who come from homes where situations are challenging for them.
“Obviously because of the nature of fostering, some of the children they’re looking after may be a little bit older as well. So there are challenges with that and they’re dealing with that, and obviously dealing with that while leading quite busy lives anyway.”
He added: “To have a positive role models towards that, whether it’s a blended family from divorce, a blended family from not naturalised birth, or adoption, fostering — whatever your journey might be— I think it’s important to [feel seen]. We’re not trying to be representative, there are many different pathways to parenthood, but it is important.”
Beyond Paradise airs on BBC One at 8pm tomorrow.
