Beyond Paradise’s Humphrey and Martha face tough goodbye in series finale
The couple's foster daughter returned home to her mum
What did you miss?
Beyond Paradise’s Humphrey and Martha were left heartbroken in series three’s finale as they were told their foster daughter was going home.
The couple, played by Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton, took in Rosie in the latest series of the BBC show and they have been learning how to juggle looking after a child with Humphrey’s detective role and Martha’s work at the restaurant. Both have warmed to family life and in the last episode they threw Rosie a birthday party.
But in the middle of all the fun, Sally got a call telling her Rosie was leaving.
What, how and why?
The series of the Death in Paradise spin-off ended on Friday, 2 May, and saw Humphrey investigating the mysterious disappearance of a woman named Lucy who had been cycling to work at the local hospital when she vanished.
He also found time to whip up a chocolate cake for Rosie’s pirate-themed birthday and put work on hold to be there despite being embroiled in the case.
“I can’t leave while Lucy is still missing,” he told his work partner Esther, who is played by Zahra Ahmadi. But she told him: “Trust me, you don’t get many opportunities to show up. Before you know it they are an independent woman and they don’t need you anymore.”
Having made it to the celebration in time, the detective donned a pirate hat and got stuck into playing party games. But as he played with the children Martha realised that she had missed a call from Rosie’s social worker and slipped off to chat to her.
Looking tearful afterwards, she told Humphrey: “Rosie’s going home.” “But…” he replied, with a look of dismay. “I know,” said Martha.
“Rosie is so lucky,” Martha’s mum Anne (Barbara Flynn) told them. “You have given her stability and love when she needed it the most.”
“So why does it feel like we are the lucky ones?” asked Humphrey.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” said Martha. “I know it’s stupid but I thought we would have more time. I didn’t think it would…”
“Hurt,” Humphrey chimed in. “Hurt this much.”
Rosie was collected the next day and the couple told her she was now family and that they were only ever a phone call away. “I miss her so much already,” Martha said after she left.
What else happened on Beyond Paradise?
There was also more upset for Esther and Archie (Jamie Bamber), whose budding romance ended last week when Esther decided she didn’t want to see the wine dealer anymore.
Archie was paid a visit by Esther’s daughter Zoe and he opened up about his feelings for her mum. “The feelings are definitely mutual… she’s just scared or stubborn or both,” Zoe insisted.
“You could try and win her back,” she urged.
Archie took her advice and asked Esther to meet him. But when she saw him she changed her mind at the last minute and didn’t get out of the car. Winding down the window she told him: “I just can’t… I’m sorry Archie.”
The BBC has yet to make an official announcement on whether there will be a fourth series of Beyond Paradise.
