Now this is what happens when worlds collide! After a whirlwind debut week, TV’s newest daytime soap opera, Beyond the Gates, ran headlong into one of television’s oldest late night shows, Saturday Night Live. SNL is, of course, in the middle of celebrating its 50th season, which is a huge milestone that even most soap operas never hit! (Though at this point, The Bold and the Beautiful is the only soap currently airing that’s still working towards that goal.)
But during SNL‘s Weekend Update segment, co-anchor Colin Jost gave “an honorable mention” to CBS’ new soap, cracking a joke about the “first daytime Black soap opera,” and a companion soap opera called, well, we’ll just let you check out the clip below! And we’ll just say that the folks over at Beyond the Gates were thrilled to have made it onto Saturday Night Live so soon!
“What?!” a stunned Daphnée Duplaix (Nicole) wrote, sharing the clip. “An honorable mention on SNL… So freakin’ awesome!”
Her Fairmont Crest sister, Karla Mosley (Dani) was just as excited. “Ok, after having the most amazing time taping [CBS’] @aftermidnight last week,” she shared on her own Instagram page, “I said to our PR team, ‘I’m coming for you, SNL!’ …This was faster than I’d imagined… Seriously, y’all, thanks for the honorable mention!”
As headwriter and executive producer Michele Val Jean tweeted, “Perfect end to a crazy week.”
Brandon Claybon (Martin), Jibre Hordges (Jacob) and Maurice Johnson (Ted) were just a few of the other stars who shared the clip. And lest you think the show, its cast, crew or showrunners are just going to sit back and rest on their laurels after this moment, think again!
“Luvvit, SNL,” executive producer Sheila Ducksworth shared on her own Instagram. “Week two coming in hot!”
And we don’t doubt that for a second after not just last week, but that Friday cliffhanger at Bill and Hayley’s lavishly explosive wedding. A room filled with guests, a blackmailed family, a golden gun — it’s clear that Beyond the Gates is starting off running and it’s not slowing down anytime soon! It’s also clear that if Saturday Night Live wants some soapy inspiration for sketches, CBS’ new soap is going to provide plenty.
