Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise fans have been left devastated after Commissioner Selwyn Patterson revealed he was being "phased out" of his role, but some are convinced it will bring back a familiar detective
Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise aficionados are abuzz with speculation that Humphrey Goodman (portrayed by Kris Marshall) might make a much-anticipated return amidst concerns that Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) could be exiting Saint Marie.
In recent heart-wrenching scenes, Selwyn admitted to his team that his tenure as the Commissioner was about to dissolve.
He tenderly apologised to Darlene Curtis (played by Ginny Holder), before revealing: “There is also a second apology I have to make.”
He continued, “I have been keeping something from you which… on the advice of a trusted friend, I have decided to share with you all.”
Dropping the bombshell, he disclosed, “The position of Saint Marie’s Police Commissioner is being phased out and I am being phased out.”
Naomi (starred by Shantol Jackson) protested in disbelief: “They can’t,” only for Selwyn to respond solemnly: “I am afraid they can, and they are.”, reports the Express.
While many fans are heartbroken pondering the Commissioner’s departure, others speculate it could herald the comeback of some past favourites.
Hopeful musings circulated on a Facebook fan group, where one member suggested: “If Selwyn Patterson leaves Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise, can we have Humphrey and Jack come back to save him from being axed? ” Echoing the sentiment, another declared: “Bring back Humphrey.”
Affection for characters past and present was evident as one fan added: “I like all of the characters, especially Selwyn, I do miss Kris Marshall.”
Meanwhile, others expressed missing Neville and Florence, commenting on the changed feel of the show without them.
Consensus seemed to form around the love for Humphrey as another fan pitched: “Humphrey was my favourite, he could come back to save Selwyn’s job,”.
Although Humphrey has made a comeback to Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise following his departure, he’s currently gracing the screen in the show’s spin-off, Beyond Paradise. Ardal O’Hanlon, known for his portrayal of Jack Mooney, has also recently returned to the fold in the fresh Australian spin-off, Return to Paradise.
