Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise fans are worried about Commissioner Selwyn Patterson's future on the island after a major twist last week but there was a new twist in this week's episode

Fans are worried Selwyn may leave Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise

While Detective Inspectors may come and go in Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) has always been a constant presence on the island of Saint Marie. However, recent plot twists have left fans fearing for his future on the show. Last week, the Chief Commissioner in Jamaica hinted at potential layoffs due to budget cuts, leaving Selwyn’s position hanging in the balance. Despite seeking support from the mayor, he was told nothing could be done.

Matters escalated when Selwyn, under the influence, had a heated exchange with Darlene (Ginny Holder), before revealing his potential departure to his team. “I have been keeping something from you which… on the advice of a trusted friend, I have decided to share with you all. The position of Saint Marie’s Police Commissioner is being phased out, and I am being phased out,” he confessed.

In the latest episode on Friday 21 February, more details emerged about what might be next for Selwyn. As the team delved into the case of a man poisoned at a distillery and DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) enjoyed his new home comforts of an air conditioner and a satellite dish (at least temporarily), Darlene expressed concern for the Commissioner.

Meanwhile, Sebastian (Shaquille Ali-Yebuah) proposed a plan – starting a petition to get Selwyn reinstated. Catherine then shared the online petition with Selwyn, showing him just how much he means to everyone on the island, reports the Mirror.

Commissioner Patterson, a staple character since the first episode of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise aired in October 2011, is one of only three characters to have been featured in every series. Alongside Catherine and lizard Harry, he has witnessed Richard Poole (Ben Miller), Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon) and Neville Parker (Ralf Little) all step into the role of Saint Marie’s detective inspector during his tenure, prior to the arrival of current DI Mervin Wilson.

Despite Selwyn’s popularity among the islanders, some fans speculate that he may be leaving the show, with rumours swirling about the potential return of a beloved character as a replacement – Officer Dwayne Myers, played by Danny John-Jules, who was last seen in the Christmas episode. The BBC and Don Warrington have remained tight-lipped about Selwyn’s future on the show.

However, in a recent chat with Radio Times, Don Warrington expressed his delight at being part of a show that now boasts an entirely black key cast following the introduction of Don Gilet as lead detective, viewing it as a positive shift.

Delving into the global impact of his latest project, the star shared, “One is tentative about these things, because if we look at it in a broader political spectrum, the world is in a strange place at the moment. There’s a lot of reactionary stuff going on. I think this kind of thing acts as an antidote to that. Whatever the intentions were in this, it’s having a wholly positive reaction – and that can’t be celebrated enough,” expressing his joy over the overwhelmingly positive response from fans.
