Don Warrington, one of the longest-serving characters on Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise, has fond memories of meeting Don Gilet during his audition for the show. Warrington, who has portrayed Commissioner Selwyn Patterson since the BBC series began in 2011, was impressed when Gilet, 58, walked in.

He said: “Our eyes lit up,” before adding: “Don G has a vibration to him, which I thought suited the role very well. I was very keen on him getting the job because I thought we could work well together.”

Gilet, best known for his role as serial killer Lucas Johnson on EastEnders, made his debut as detective inspector Mervin Wilson in the Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise Christmas special.

He spoke warmly about the reception he received from his co-stars, telling Radio Times: “They welcomed me with open arms, and it’s not changed. There’s still this camaraderie that I’m so thankful and blessed for. I’m now part of the family.”

Mervin landed on Saint Marie in search of his biological mother, only to find out she had passed away a few months earlier. Although he initially intended to head back to London, it seems something will compel the new detective to remain on the island, reports the Express.

Despite aiming to impress the BBC executives, the star from Holby City is hesitant to take solace in the high ratings.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m being clichéd or precious, but nobody does the job for ratings,” he admitted. Gilet further commented: “I like to know that my family and friends enjoyed what they saw, especially ones that were fans.”

The BBC has announced that the premiere of series 14 is set for January 31 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
