Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise viewers had reason to celebrate as Harry the lizard returned in the latest episode.

The lizard has been featured in the BBC series for several years and has captured the hearts of fans, who often clamour for a Harry appearance as the show airs. He popped up in the episode that aired on Friday, 21 February and viewers were thrilled, with several posting heart emojis on social media when he slithered across the screen.

But others were worried as the storyline saw his bungalow home getting chilly as new detective inspector Mervin Wilson invested in an air conditioning unit. A post on the show’s official X account even pleaded: “Don’t freeze Harry!”

DI Wilson (Don Gilet) has made it clear that he isn’t all that enamoured with everything on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, and in Friday’s episode he installed satellite so that he could watch football and got aircon to help him stay cool.

Colleague Naomi (Shantol Jackson) wasn’t a fan, complaining about how cold it was in his house, but he insisted: “That is temperature perfection – 18C bang on. I mean, the downside is, you have to keep all the doors and windows closed otherwise it doesn’t work properly but it’s a small price to pay right?”

However, Naomi was worried about Harry, telling the detective: “I don’t think Harry is enjoying this as much as you are.”

“Oh sorry I didn’t know you were there,” the DI said, opening a window and letting the CGI-generated lizard outside into the sunshine. “Go on, go and get warm mate!”

Viewers were excited to see the lizard again, with some posting “Harry” on social media along with heart emojis. “Was only thinking hadn’t seen Harry since the first episode,” one said on Instagram.

“Aww, it’s our wee Harry. Time he got a best supporting actor award,” another fan said on X.

Others complained that the new climate in the lizard’s beachside pad would be a bit frosty for him. “Harry will not be pleased,” one said. “Poor Harry, he’s too cold to be in his own home, protect Harry,” someone else posted on the platform.

Another commented: “Mervin wants air conditioning and Sky TV, I get the Sky, but just stand by the sea if you want a breeze. How does Harry feel about this?”

Someone else joked that Harry was “currently biting at the wires of the satellite dish out of annoyance”.

“Awww got to love Harry,” one viewer wrote on Instagram, after a message was posted on the show’s official account saying: “Caring for your lizard 101: lizards are cold-blooded and don’t enjoy air conditioning.”

Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise continues at 9pm on BBC One on Friday, 28 February.
