Kris Marshall has opened up about the rollercoaster journey of ITV’s Sanditon, a series adapted from Jane Austen’s unfinished novel. After a rocky start and initial cancellation, the romantic drama made an impressive comeback for a second season in July 2022.

In a previous candid chat with RadioTimes, the Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise star reflected on the show’s ups and downs: “It is the first show I’ve been on that has been cancelled and then reinstated.”

He highlighted the integral role devoted fans played in reviving the show, particularly after it found success across the pond: “The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back.”

The actor, who played the ambitious Tom Parker, also reminisced about witnessing passionate supporters crafting elaborate sand art tributes on the beach near where they filmed, describing the fans’ efforts as “relentless”.

Kris expressed his delight and eagerness to continue portraying the visionary entrepreneur keen on transforming Sanditon into a premier coastal destination despite the setback of a devastating fire in the first series.

When the second series gave fans another glimpse, Tom remained undeterred in his quest to bring his brilliant idea to life, reports the Express.

Viewers can currently catch Kris on their screens as he appears in the eagerly-anticipated Christmas special of Beyond Paradise.

The synopsis for the festive instalment, which airs tonight, reads: “Humphrey and Esther try to unravel whether a widower’s ghostly visions are a manifestation of grief or something more sinister.

“Meanwhile, a break-in at the church leaves the Nativity scene incomplete. With the Christmas service fast approaching and CS Charlie Woods due to attend, Kelby hopes to solve the mystery of the missing Virgin Mary and impress the Chief Superintendent at the same time.

“Away from the station, Humphrey and Martha’s fostering journey continues as they open their home to an introverted teenager.”

Beyond Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
