D.e.a.t.h in Paradise viewers are predicting there will be a twist after DI Mervin Wilson finally seemed to get some answers about his mum.

Wilson, who is played by Don Gilet, is the new detective inspector on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie. When he hasn’t been solving crimes, he has been focused on uncovering what happened to his mother, who supposedly died at sea.

There have been plenty of big holes in the story but in the episode of the BBC series that aired on Friday, 14 February, Mervin got a tape that seemed to prove his mother died in a storm. However, fans reckon something fishy is going on.

Wilson opened up to officer Naomi (Shantol Jackson) in the episode, explaining that he wanted to look into his mother’s apparent d.e.a.t.h.

He told her he had been brought up in care and “never had a proper family”. “I don’t know why my mum couldn’t bring me up,” he said.

Naomi did some digging and later took Mervin a tape recording of a call his mum apparently made to the harbour master on the day she died, after she’d gone out on a boat in a huge storm.

“I’m at sea, I need your help… I don’t know where I am,” the woman on the tape was heard saying, seeming to prove beyond all doubt that Dorna had died out on the water.

Looking heartbroken, Mervin called Commissioner Selwyn (Don Warrington) to say he had evidence that his mum had died in the way he had been told. And he told him that he was shutting down the case and moving on.

“You were right about my mother,” he told Selwyn. “Turns out it really was an accident. Irrefutable proof.”

However, viewers were not quite as sure, with several pointing out that Dorna could be heard clearly and that it hadn’t sounded as if she was speaking during bad weather.

“That audio, if there was a storm where was the sounds of the storm, there was no bad weather behind it,” one remarked on X. “There is something odd about that audio,” agreed somebody else.

Another viewer added that it “didn’t sound very stormy”. “Surely you wouldn’t be able to hear a word over the phone in a storm,” they went on. “Especially the ones we’ve seen Saint Marie have.”

“He’ll listen to it again and realise it was a fake,” one person predicted. “I don’t trust that audio of his mother and I’m sure Mervin will eventually pick it up,” commented another.

Others said they think Mervin’s mum will actually turn out to be alive.

One posted: “The suspicious music with Mervin’s mum, she’s not dead, totally calling it here.” Another said: “I’m thinking someone (perhaps even Selwyn) is hiding things from Mervin about his mother. Perhaps still alive but who was the body.”

D.e.a.t.h in Paradise continues at 9pm on BBC One on Friday, 21 February.
