Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) confronted her alleged attacker in dramatic EastEnders scenes as the 40th anniversary week kicked off with a showdown at No. 45 Albert Square.

The matriarch, as viewers know, was whacked across the back of the head at Christmas time, with her attacker having ripped a locket from around her neck while she lay motionless in the snow.

Cindy has been on a mission to find out who it was that delivered the crushing blow with the snow shovel and after eliminating Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) and Kathy (Gillian Taylforth), she came to believe that Ian (Adam Woodyatt) was responsible.

Determined to get answers, Cindy attempted to gain entry to No. 45 – the very place she used to call home – believing that if she could locate the missing locket on the property it would prove Ian’s guilt.

Monday’s (February 17) edition of the BBC One soap, the first of four anniversary specials, saw Cindy confront Ian with her theory in the pub – in front of everyone!

Ian was adamant that he wasn’t to blame for the attack, with the whole Square siding with him, knowing full well that he wouldn’t be capable of such a thing.

Speculation soon commenced regarding who it was that actually attacked Cindy as the Square residents pondered who would want revenge on the matriarch that much.

Terrified for her life and still under the belief that Ian was her attacker, Cindy begged Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) for his gun. When he refused, she stole the weapon herself and obtained entry to No. 45.

To her shock, someone was holding the locket right before her very eyes. ‘You’, she exclaimed, pointing the firearm at them as she approached with intent.

The question is: just who is it that was gripping the locket? Are they Cindy’s attacker? And will Cindy take revenge and pull the trigger?

EastEnders continues Tuesday February 18 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
