EastEnders Sonia baby name ‘revealed’ ahead of live birth – and it’s nod to Walford icon
EastEnders legend Sonia Fowler will give birth to her baby live on air this week - and fans are convinced they know what she is going to call the newborn
EastEnders viewers are convinced they’ve figured out the name of Sonia Fowler’s impending baby.
The television icon (Natalie Cassidy) has been a mainstay on the soap since her first appearance in 1993. As the perpetually unlucky-in-love, trumpet-playing resident of Walford, Sonia has had her fair share of dramatic moments. From teenage pregnancy to affairs and disputes, her stint in Walford has been anything but dull.
Particularly recently, as a pregnant Sonia found herself incarcerated for a m.u.r.d.e.r she didn’t commit. Viewers will remember that her partner and father of her baby, Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman), was the one who k.i.l.le.d his ex-wife Debbie last year, and Sonia was charged with the crime.
However, a jury recently acquitted her, leading to her release from prison. In a recent development, actress Natalie Cassidy confirmed her departure from the soap after nearly 32 years.
This week, EastEnders is marking its 40th anniversary, with Sonia reportedly playing a central role. It was recently revealed that Sonia will give birth to her child while trapped in The Queen Vic during a catastrophic fire, reports Plymouth Live.
Moreover, this is set to occur during the soap’s live episode on Wednesday (February 19). However, before Sonia’s exit and childbirth, fans believe they’ve ‘cracked’ what she’ll name her baby.
According to a Reddit thread, viewers speculate she’ll name it Dot, in honour of Dot Branning (June Brown). Fans reckon she’s sure to name the nipper Dot, as one lamented: “Oh god she really is going to call her Dot isn’t she,” in reference to her kid.
Another was on the same page: “I’d say it would almost certainly be Dorothy, yeah. Which would be sweet. Don’t see her shortening it to Dotty though somehow.” A third piped up: “I think first name will definitely be Dorothy. Dot has always been Sonia’s number one.” Dot, brought to life by June Brown, was dubbed an EastEnders icon.
Among the most enduring stars of the soap, she first graced the screen as the fag-puffing Dot back in ’85 and bid farewell in 2020. Spilling the beans about her EastEnders exit, Sonia star Natalie Cassidy dished to The Sun: “I feel extremely sad to be writing this, but also very excited.
“After another 11 solid years back on The Square, I have decided it’s time to move on to pastures new. EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show.
“Thank you to Chris Clenshaw for the opportunity to be such a big part of the 40th anniversary – it’s an honour. See ya, Sonia, going but never forgotten.”
