Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) has admitted her heartbreak for Martin Fowler (James Bye) following their daughter Bex’s (Jasmine Armfield) return to EastEnders.

The stalwart has had a turbulent year, which will eventually coincide with her exit in the coming months.

As viewers of the BBC soap know, she was wrongly imprisoned for murder, unaware that her then-fiancé Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) was responsible.

His big secret was then exposed to her sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), who was subsequently held hostage in Reiss’ storage lock up.

As the truth came to light, he went on the run – but would soon arrive back to Albert Square during the show’s 40th anniversary week.

Following a confrontation with Bianca, Reiss jumped into his car and attempted to flee again. As he darted along Bridge Street, he swerved to avoid hitting Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and crashed into The Queen Vic barrel store.

In doing so, he ignited a number of gas bottles that tore an epic explosion through the famed boozer.

Reiss ultimately lost his life in the blast when a bathtub fell on him, but the biggest tragedy was Martin.

Whilst dealing with the grief and supporting his two other ex-wives, Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton), she’s also had to bring up her newborn daughter Julia.

Sonia also offered a lifeline to the Knight and Carter families, who lost not only their livelihood in the blaze, but their home.

Earlier this week, we saw a mysterious woman befriending Sonia and Bianca, as they bonded over a negative review she’d left Ian’s restaurant online.

It soon transpired that the woman had purposely come to the area to seek an interview opportunity with the sisters about their ordeal for her podcast.

In today’s episode, Sonia was excited to hear that Bex had landed back in London, and was adamant that nothing could ruin her day.

Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe) felt like her family were imposing on her chance to grieve, and reminded her that it was ok not to be ok.

Bianca returned home, and announced that she wanted to take part in the podcast to give her some closure.

Sonia remained firm, telling her that she didn’t give her blessing and it won’t be something she will take part in. She also told her elder sister to seek help from a therapist if she is suffering from PTSD.

Later, Sonia began to worry that Martin’s life would go unmarked.

She opened up to Bianca, telling her that she was his first love and has had to hide her true feelings for the last two months whilst Stacey claimed to be the love of his life.

Luckily, Bex soon walked through the door and broke up an awkward conversation. However, fresh devastation soon hit Sonia when her daughter asked if she would accompany her to the undertakers to say a final goodbye.

Will Sonia be able to bid farewell to Martin?
