EastEnders Star Alice Haig Has a Surprise Family Connection to the Soap
Vicki Fowler has made a dramatic return to EastEnders this week - with the introduction of new actress Alice Haig - but she's not the only family member to star in the soap
EastEnders star Alice Haig has recently joined the soap, playing the role of Vicki Fowler. It’s Alice’s first time in Albert Square, despite Vicki having starred in the soap until 2004.
During her exit two decades ago, Vicki was played by Scarlett Alice Johnson, after the character was reintroduced after eight years off screen. Although it’s Alice’s first time on the Square, she has family ties to the iconic Walford as her mother has actually appeared in the BBC soap before.
Alice’s father, David Haig, is also famous in the acting industry. David is an actor and playwright who’s best known for his role as Bernard in Four Weddings and a Funeral. However, it’s actually her mother who has starred in EastEnders before.
The star’s mother, Juila Gray, acts under the name of Jane Galloway, starred in two episodes of the soap in 2006, as Dr. Weisberg. She’s also starred in shows including The Last Detective, Doctors and Casualty.
Alice’s father David, on the other hand has been honoured with an MBE for his work in the arts. David, 69, starred alongside Rowan Atkinson in The Thin Blue Line, and has also had roles in huge shows including Doc Martin, The Thick of It, and Downton Abbey.
Most recently, fans may recognise him from his role in K.i.l.l.i.n.g Eve, when he played Sandra Oh’s spy associate Bill – who was brutally m.u.r.d.e.r.e.d by Jodie Comer as assassin Villanelle.
Vicki has returned to Albert Square after 20 years for her uncle, Martin Fowler’s funeral. Martin’s heartbreaking d.e.a.t.h happened during the 40th live episode last month, during a devastating explosion in the Queen Vic.
However, Vicki has come with her own baggage. Upon her arrival, Alfie Moon was elated to see his younger brother, Spencer Moon.
Unfortunately, he was no where to be seen as it was revealed the pair had gone their separate ways. The character now has a new partner, Ross and a stepson, Joel. And it appears Vicki hasn’t just returned to Walford for her uncle Martin’s funeral as her partner Ross was seen cryptically discussing money issues with her.
When Alice’s casting was announced, she revealed she was a huge fan of the show. “I am so excited. I have always watched the show, and I was born in February 1985, so I’m the same age as EastEnders!”, she exclaimed.
“It’s so cool to be playing a character like Vicki – we think we know her, but a lot has changed. I can’t wait for all the Albert Square drama ahead.”
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
