Emmerdale confirms another sickening twist in Rhona Goskirk story as Gus Malcolms makes bold move

Since Gus Malcolms (Alan McKenna) first appeared in Emmerdale asking Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry)’s permission to use the embryos that they’d had frozen during their marriage, it’s a story that’s had many twists.

Rhona was devastated to discover that, after she refused permission, Gus went ahead and forged her signature after stealing her passport. Almost as soon as Rhona had made this discovery, baby Ivy arrived in the world.

With Ivy’s birth mother dying soon after the birth, Gus was unable to cope with looking after Ivy and Rhona and her family soon stepped in, caring for the baby over Christmas and the weeks following. During that time they all bonded with the baby.

For Rhona the bond was so visceral that when Gus announced he was moving to France and Ivy would be going with him, she couldn’t bear to part with the baby she considers to be her daughter. So she vanished from the village, taking Ivy with her.

This has led to her facing trial for kidnap. Gus, meanwhile, also faces court for fraud because of the way he stole the embryo.

So Gus offered a deal. If Rhona changed her statement so it looked like it had been Gus’s wife who forged the papers and he had no knowledge of it, he would change his statement about her kidnapping Ivy. In return, he would cancel his house sale and stay nearby – and he and Rhona would co-parent Ivy.

It was everything Rhona wanted and she was prepared to take the risk, but in Monday (March 4)’s episode Marlon (Mark Charnock) cautioned her that Gus couldn’t be trusted and was ‘playing’ her. Wise words, but Rhona – as so often in this story – decided to ignore sensible advice and follow her heart. She went to see Gus.

They firmed up their agreement and Rhona was just leaving when Gus had an unexpected visitor – an estate agent who’d come to take some measurements of the house for the new buyers. As Marlon feared, Gus had deceived Rhona and hadn’t cancelled the house sale at all. His plan was to allow her to change her statement so he would be let off the fraud charge – and then move to France with Ivy anyway.

Obviously as soon as she realised what was going on, Rhona was enraged.

‘You’re a liar, and a thief, and a cheat!’ she told him. ‘And I’m going to make sure you get sent down for what you’ve done.’

She added that as soon as the ‘ridiculous’ kidnapping charge was ‘laughed out of court’ she wouldn’t rest until she had Ivy back home with her where she belongs.

Will she succeed?
