Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) struggled to come to terms with his own guilt in the wake of Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) return home.

Moira, as viewers know, underwent brain surgery last month to remove a tumour, which had been causing her to have seizures and behave erratically.

The operation was something that she was incredibly nervous and terrified about – and she wasn’t alone on this front, with Cain struggling to process the possibility that he might lose her.

But while Moira was undergoing the procedure, Cain lashed out at the world, hitting Jimmy King (Nick Miles) and sleeping with Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly).

Moira discovered his former mistake when he was arrested at the hospital shortly after she woke up but it’s the latter one that she remains in the dark about.

Cain is struggling to get his head around his monumental betrayal and with Moira due home on Friday (December 6), he went out of his way to make her homecoming a special one – but he was left in shock when she returned home earlier than expected.

Moira was pleased to see her husband and after a restful afternoon together, she took him to a particular spot on the farm to talk about Holly Barton, who came to visit her while she was undergoing the operation.

The matriarch broke down as she recalled how Holly, who died eight years ago, wanted her to go into the light. Moira told Cain that she wasn’t ready to leave this world, choosing instead to stay with him and the kids.

Such a thing left Cain feeling even more guilt. He fought tears, with Moira believing that he was still in mourning over the recent death of patriarch Zak (Steve Halliwell), with Cain revealing that he feels like he’ll never be able to live up to his legendary father.

Moira argued otherwise and soon the couple returned to their home, where they enjoyed lying together on the bed. Moira smiled, telling Cain how she thought she might never be able to do this again and is relieved to be spending time with him.

Cain told her that he loves her and, as she dosed off, he took a long hard look at himself in the mirror – literally – as the guilt over his betrayal with Ruby started to consume him.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 or stream from 7am on ITVX.
