Emmerdale has finally confirmed Lucy Malcolms’ (Charlotte Asprey) cause of death amid Rhona Goskirk’s (Zoe Henry) trial – and she wasn’t to blame.

Rhona has been on trial this week for kidnapping baby Ivy. She ran off with the child, who is biologically her daughter, after Gus Malcolms (Alan McKenna) revealed that he wanted to move to France with her.

During questioning from the prosecution, Gus’ lawyer put great emphasis on the row Rhona and Gus’ wife Lucy had had before her death.

Rhona had been horrified to discover that Gus had stolen her passport and taken embryos they had frozen when they were married, and used them to have a baby with Lucy.

With Lucy heavily pregnant, she went into premature labour during a confrontation with Rhona over the situation, before later sadly dying in childbirth.

Because of their row, Gus was quick to blame Rhona for Lucy’s death, and Rhona felt a huge amount of guilt as well.

When Gus and the prosecution in Rhona’s trial tried to insist that she was to blame for Lucy’s death, Rhona was quick to set them straight by revealing the real cause of death.

She explained that Lucy had an underlying health condition that had caused her to suffer a haemorrhage during the birth, meaning it had nothing to do with the stress of their row, as Gus had tried to suggest.

At the moment, Rhona’s fate still hangs in the balance, though Gus is convinced that she will be found guilty, having had an outburst on the stand.

Is he right, or will Rhona be able to return to her family as an innocent woman?
