Emmerdale icon Chris Chittell has made a cheeky dig at the soap’s storylines.

Chris, 76, has appeared in the ITV soap since 1986, and is the longest-serving cast member.

In recent weeks he’s found himself at the centre of a huge storyline in which his character Eric Pollard swindled neighbour Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) out of a large sum of cash.

As viewers will know, this is typical Pollard behaviour!

However, it was a storyline concerning co-star Emile John, who plays Ethan Anderson, that prompted him to speak out on social media.

Ethan is facing prison for causing serious injuries to Nicky Milligan (Lewis Cope) when the car he was driving them in crashed. Nicky was left with serious head injuries and has been in a coma ever since, with his anxious parents at his bedside.

Having fled from the scene and worried about how it could affect his legal career if he was found guilty, he confided in dad Charles (Kevin Mathurin) who then called the police, and Ethan was arrested.

When Nicky’s parents, Caleb (William Ash) and Ruby (Beth Cordingly), found out that Ethan was responsible for their son’s injuries they vowed revenge, as did Nicky’s uncle Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) – with one of them targeting him in a hit and run attack.

Replying to a video of the story posted on X/Twitter, a fan said: ‘Really odd this Ethan story? He’s a man of the law, and he’s giving moral highground to his dad?

‘How does that work lol when he’s 100% in the wrong too, then no comment, how can you use no comment trick with solicitor next to you? Emmerdale do some right oddball scripts.’

Chris, who has privatised his account, replied back: ‘Methinks you are being polite!’Ouch.

This isn’t the first time that the stalwart has taken a swipe at the programme. During a chat with the Soap from the Box podcast in 2022 he said: ‘The biggest change is the topic of storylines, they’re all sensationalist, which is a shame.

‘We have to look at life and be able to reflect it to do our jobs. And life as we see it now, hells bells, you daren’t cough, walk in the street because there’s a death.

‘But life is not like that.’
