Over recent weeks in Emmerdale we’ve seen the seeds of a romance begin to sprout between Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) and Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough). Suzy has been supportive of Mary throughout some hard times, such as when she was humiliated and conned by Faye (Jane Gurnett), a woman she’d fallen for.

Faye was Mary’s first relationship since she came out as gay – which only happened after she arrived in the village a couple of years ago. Coming out was a brave step for Mary, who decided to try looking for love via online dating.

After a couple of unsuccessful dates she met Faye, who seemed to be everything she was looking for and Mary quickly fell for her, only to be devastated when Faye turned out to be a cruel con artist.

Suzy was there to support Mary in the aftermath of this, and a close friendship developed.

On New Year’s Eve the two women had a bit of a moment when Suzy called in to see Mary, who was babysitting at home. Mary was worried about the situation with baby Ivy, knowing that her daughter Rhona (Zoe Henry) was probably headed for heartbreak. Suzy said she’d always be there to support her friend, and the two exchanged one of those charged looks – only to be interrupted by the baby crying.

More recently it was Mary’s turn to come to Suzy’s aid when Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and Tom King (James Chase)’s wedding – which Suzy was organising – descended into chaos.

As Mary helped Suzy to retrieve what was left of the day, there was another moment between them when it seemed that romance could be just around the corner.

Then Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), Suzy’s ex, returned to Emmerdale and Mary was heartbroken to see them kiss.

Since that kiss, Suzy and Vanessa have been a bit distant with each other, with Vanessa unsure about whether to commit again to her former partner.

In Tuesday (March 5)’s episode, Rhona gave her old friend Vanessa some advice, telling her to give things with Suzy another shot. Unwittingly, Rhona had just sealed her poor mum’s fate.

At a karaoke night at the Woolpack Vanessa seized the opportunity to tell Suzy how she felt via the medium of song. She sang ‘You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You’ by Sonia, looking directly at Suzy the whole time. It wasn’t subtle but it was effective.

Afterwards, Vanessa asked Mary to give her and Suzy some space. Mary left them to it, which was absolutely heartbreaking as before Vanessa came in she and Suzy had been getting on really well and Gail (Rachael Gill-Davis) had told Mary that she thought Suzy liked her – and told her the age gap wasn’t important.

So Mary left Vanessa telling Suzy that she was ready to give their romance another go. As they kissed, Mary turned away to hide her tears.

Poor Mary. Will she ever find love?
