Emmerdale star admits ‘every day I’m in pain’ after nightmare health diagnosis
Former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas opened up about his debilitating health issue that has caused him pain for nearly three years during a chat on ITV's Good Morning Britain
Ex-Emmerdale star Adam Thomas opened up about his horror health battle.
The actor, who played Adam Barton on the ITV soap for nearly a decade, has been open about his Rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. The star went public with it in 2023 and has been in unbearable pain due to the condition.
In January of that year he couldn’t get out of bed and at one point it seemed like he may not have been able to appear on Strictly. Luckily, the 36-year-old managed to battle through the pain and take to the dancefloor.
However, he’s now revealed he’s been in pain “every day” for the last couple of years. He opened up about his health battle on Tuesday (February 11) during an appearance onITV’s Good Morning Britain.
The Waterloo Road star told presenters Ed Balls and Susanna Reid: “It’s been tough. I’m not overexaggerating when I say this but those two and a half years, every day I’ve been in pain.”
He has tried different medications and sought advice from a number of doctors to find a way to cope with the auto-immune disease, which causes joint inflammation, pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. He he has now found “a little bit of hope” by switching to a carnivore diet.
“I’ve noticed a huge difference, especially within the past couple of weeks,” he told the show. “It’s given me a little bit of hope now.”
He continued: “I feel like the inflammation is going down a little bit and I’m getting my life back which is the most important thing.” The carnivore diet is high in protein and fat, but low in carbohydrates and is primarily made up of animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, and animal fats.
Adam believes his dad could have had it the condition as arthritis being hereditary, but is unsure as he never spoke about it.
The actor said he’s feeling the “best” he has in a while, declaring: “I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I’m feeling the best way I’ve felt for a while.”
Adam, who returns as Donte Charles in series 15 of Waterloo Road later this month, has admitted his condition makes it hard for him to dress himself. He received his diagnosis just before he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2023, where he danced with show pro Luba Mushtuk and made it to week seven.
