Emmerdale star Ned Porteous has opened up about the huge Joe Tate and Caleb Miligan fight scenes. Last night, the pair – played by Ned and Will Ash – came to physical blows as Caleb learned what Joe had done.

Fans of the show will remember Joe had Caleb attacked and took his kidney as he was desperate to survive and had weeks to live. He had originally tried to take Noah’s kidney but that didn’t work and he turned to Caleb.

In huge fight scenes last night, Caleb learned of Joe’s deception and vowed to “annihilate” his rival after learning the truth. Ned has now spoken about those big scenes and all that happened.

Speaking on the Off Script podcast to husband and wife duo Kelvin and Liz Fletcher, he said: “You like to think of it as a collaboration but effectively, we’re the ingredients in a kitchen that is run by a director and a coordinator whose job it is to keep us all safe – and more importantly, the cameras don’t get damaged. Something that reads on camera!

“There’s a big difference between what we read on set and how we think it looks and we really want to try and tap in to what it looks like to be in a confrontation when you recently had an organ removed and you’ve been dealing with the pains of being on and off medication. The idea of someone putting pressure on a fresh wound and having lost a kidney as well, there’s all of that.”

He added: “It’s a big deal; it’s a bit of a shambles of a fight. You’ve got these two people; they’re knackered and in so much pain, trying to hurt each other. My character’s wanting to be like please don’t k.i.l.l me but I don’t want to appear too scared of you.”

Sharing a behind the scenes secret, Ned revealed how these big fight scenes come to life.

“You almost want the take to be the first one. If it comes down to the rehearsal, the actors work out quite quickly, the rehearsal is not for you, it’s for all the important people. I don’t really like to go full into it but I show the camera people were my marks are and I show the audio people how loud I am going to be … If you’re lucky to get that in one take, that’s where the magic happens,” he said.

There have been real fears that this could end in a double d.e.a.t.h for both Caleb and Joe. Whilst Caleb is adamant for Joe to d.i.e and be “annihilated” for what he’s done to Caleb, both men are not 100 per cent – so could this end in a double d.e.a.t.h for the pair?

Fan favourites Will Ash and Ned Porteous have both been open about their future on the soap and whilst it looks like they’re staying around for a little while, what does the future hold for the pair?
