Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) knew the true meaning of happiness for all of a split second in Emmerdale after Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) officially recognised him as his dad.

Nate, as viewers know, came into Cain’s life four years ago and, feeling like he’d been robbed of a father, he seduced Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) – his own stepmum – into bed in a bid to teach Cain a lesson.

Surprisingly, Cain managed to find the strength to forgive the son he never knew he had, with the two even forging some semblance of a relationship.

But it felt like the father and son duo made a proper breakthrough in this department on Friday (April 12), with Nate officially deciding to call Cain ‘dad’ to his face. Cain struggled to hide his smile, feeling all warm and fuzzy for just a moment.

However, there was soon sadness as having a good relationship with son Nate comes at the cost of one with his long-lost brother Caleb Miligan (William Ash).

Caleb, as fans will recall, embarked on a passionate affair last year with Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh), who was married to Nate at the time. Nate was livid when he found out, as was Cain, who wasted little time in disowning his brother.

Slowly but surely, however, the ice thawed between the two siblings, with Cain even paying Caleb a visit in hospital earlier this week following his surgery.

Caleb was hopeful that this was a good sign for their relationship but Cain ultimately broke his heart by revealing that they simply cannot be in each other’s lives as he has to side with Nate on this one.

Nate, who is being completely hypocritical given what he did when he first arrived in the village, has made it quite clear that he and Cain have no future if he allows Caleb in his life, hence why the mechanic cut ties.

But doing so proved much more difficult than Cain had bargained for, with the hard-man later seen staring longingly at his brother, who he cares deeply for, knowing that he can never be in his life.

Oh Cain. Not crying, I promise.

Emmerdale continues Monday April 15 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
