Exclusive: BBC Death In Paradise first look at Commissioner Selwyn Patterson’s sad show exit
Death In Paradise will air some sad scenes this week as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson makes a sad exit from the show after losing his job
Death In Paradise will air some heartbreaking scenes this week as Selwyn Patterson’s exit looms.
In a clip from tomorrow night’s episode, exclusively shared with The Mirror, the Commissioner – played by Don Warrington – fills new Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson in on his upcoming exit. Selwyn will have to leave his role as Commissioner of Saint Marie after a petition and calls from the residents of Saint Marie failed to save his position.
The Caribbean police force have had to make budget cuts in order to save the station, and it means that Selwyn finds himself out a job. Sharing his plight with Mervin, he tells him: “Just so you know, after tomorrow, with all the changes taking place, I won’t be around as much. So, as regards to your mother’s case -.”
“I’m on my own from here,” Mervin said, with Selwyn replying: “But if you want my advice or an extra pair of eyes, then I’m more than happy to help.” Mervin then said: “I appreciate that Commissioner. I mean someone’s got to know something about what happened.”

Donna Bray, Mervin’s mother, died whilst out of sea in what was initially called a freak accident. However, Mervin believes something else happened – but will he get to the bottom of the case? Was his mum murdered, or was it just a tragic accident?
As for the Commissioner, is this really the end for the iconic character after Don starred in all 14 of the show’s series? Only time will tell whether Selwyn finds a way out of this – but it looks like it’s unlikely.
Speaking ahead of the new series, Don Warrington says the job struggle leads Selwyn to open up. He said: “It’s shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently.
Selwyn could be leaving the show
“It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn and that’s always the joy about playing a character like him – there are so many different sides to him. You think you know about somebody but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming in to bloom.”
Catherine Bordey has been a huge support for Selwyn so far. Opening up on their connection, Elizabeth Bourgine – who plays Catherine – explained: “In this series, we see just how deep their relationship and the connection between them is.
“They’re best friends. Selwyn struggles a lot this series and I think it might be the first time we see Catherine really lose her temper with him. There are times throughout the series where he’s feeling a bit down so she must pick him up. She tries to help him to take control of his life, both personally and professionally.”
