Death in Paradise

I’m a Death In Paradise superfan but there’s one horrifying part of the BBC series I can’t stand – and others agree

A Death In Paradise superfan has revealed what they dislike most about the long-standing BBC show.

The wildly popular drama sees a string of detectives tackle crime on the tropical island of Saint Marie.

Despite being a show focused on solving criminal cases, there has been a lot of romance between characters too.

DS Camille Bordey (Sara Martins) shared a romance with DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller) and Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) was seeing Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton).

While former lead detective Neville, played by Ralf Little, had a relationship with DS Florence Cassell, portrayed by Josephine Jobert, before the pair left the island together.

However, the repeated occurrences of romance and relationships between the detectives hasn’t always gone down well with viewers.

One fan wrote on Reddit: ‘Controversially speaking I don’t like the romances between the DI’s and the DS’s!

‘The power imbalance makes me squicky, for example when Humphrey almost stopped Camille from leaving because he had the power to!

‘Too realistic and too horrifying for my light-hearted murder show imo [in my opinion].’

Another fan agreed and penned: ‘YES YES YES YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Even without the power imbalance I think it would be way better if the DI’s and the DS’s stay friends, but this specific situation with Camille and Humphrey was really scary, I hated it.’

While someone else commented: ‘At least Humphrey realised the error in his ways and stopped the situation going further.’

One fan shared their verdict on some of the relationships seen on the show and said: ‘Neville and Florence were better suited to being a couple than Richard and Camille were.’

To which someone replied: ‘I never thought that Neville and Florence had any type of chemistry whatsoever… Like I thought the both of them felt super forced…’

It comes after some Death In Paradise fans blasted the BBC for ‘making the show unwatchable and turning it into trash’ because of a devastating twist.

Viewing watching an episode back in February saw the Saint Marie crime squad work on the case of a murdered young woman.

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington, has starred in the 14-season show from the start.

However, during the instalment it was revealed that Selwyn would be ‘phased out’ of the police team because of budgeting.

Of the cuts, Commissioner Selwyn said: ‘I’m afraid they can, and they are.’

The officer had been in the show since 2011 and some fans were reeling about his departure.

He ended up leaving during the series 14 finale last month.

Death In Paradise and spin-off series Return To Paradise and Beyond Paradise are all available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
