Emmerdale looks like it might lose a popular resident after 14 years in the Dales.

Tonight, Jacob Gallagher chatted with Dr Liam Cavanagh about a huge study opportunity he’d been given. He had been offered a chance to study in Berlin for six weeks but hadn’t agreed to the opportunity yet because he was worried about leaving his girlfriend Victoria Sugden behind after the pair went through so much to get together.

However, it looks like an exit could be on the cards for Jacob – played by Joe Warren Plant – as Victoria later confronts him about his decision to keep that from her – and urges him to follow his dreams and take the placement.

But could this be the end of the road for Jacob in the village – and will he split with Victoria?

Is an exit on the cards for Jacob, so soon after David's departure?

Is an exit on the cards for Jacob, so soon after David’s departure?

It comes just a few months after Jacob’s on-screen father David Metcalfe – played by Matthew Wolfenden – departed the Dales for good. David left to be with his ex Priya and their daughter Amba after learning that his son Jacob had fallen for his former partner Victoria. He couldn’t cope with the new romance and decided he had no choice but to make his departure from the Dales.

Reflecting on his exit at the time, he said: “I’m so nervous about leaving, almost two decades. It feels like the right time. The door’s left open, they’re not killing me off, I’ve been promised. I’m allowed to tell you that.

“So who knows, I might be back, we will see,” he said, “I met my wife on the show, we’ve had three kids. Not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it’s given me family. So to leave it, it’s been a big, big part of my life. There is a resolution of sorts, I can’t give too much away. Victoria is the reason why he leaves the village. Put it that way.”

Joe-Warren was gutted to see his friend and co-star depart the show, but vowed they’d keep in touch.

“I’m gutted! I’ve learnt everything from him. I had no previous acting experience, so everything came directly from Matthew. It’s sad, but we’ll keep in touch – he’s my best friend! Matthew’s the most genuine soul you could ever meet. I’ll miss him, for sure,” he said.

“It’s going to be strange… I think he’ll have to spend more time with Leyla and get used to not having a father figure in his vicinity. Jacob loves David to pieces and there’s a good energy between them. Jacob will struggle without him!”
