James Bye’s new life since quitting EastEnders as wife makes surprise admission

Actor James Bye left his role as Martin Fowler on BBC soap EastEnders in dramatic scenes and has now shared an insight into his family life with a social media update

When it comes to exits, James Bye’s final scenes on EastEnders were as dramatic as they come. Fans watched on as James’ character, Martin Fowler, died in heartbreaking scenes as the BBC soap marked 40 years on air.

Martin – who had been played by James, 40, since 2014 – died in the live episode of the BBC show last month after he had become trapped under a metal beam following an explosion at the Queen Vic after Reiss Colwell crashed his car into the pub. Now, after 10 years on the Walford set, James is seemingly relishing time away from the role – and his wife has opened up on their time together.

Taking to Instagram, his wife Victoria shared a video to their Life With The Byes page. She joked her husband is now “getting in her way” due to no longer getting up to go to work. Jokingly listing some of the issues, she revealed James, who was driving on the video, now gets up and cooks full breakfasts everyday.

She said he would be making a mess before doing it all again at lunch time. “He’s everywhere,” she said. “We’ve got two more weeks until he starts rehearsals for his play.”

She went on by saying: “But it has been lovely having you at home,” to which James sarcastically replied: “Yeah it really sounds it, it really sounds like you enjoy my company.” She laughed at his clap back about cooking breakfasts saying her man is a “feeder,” before going into his fancy recipes.

However, she explained the “incident” the couple had to deal with. “This is the worst thing that you can do and you did it,” she said. James confessed he was ashamed of his actions as Victoria told the story.

She said: “So there I was, just pottering about in the kitchen when he comes legging it down the stairs…Legs it up the drive and I’m like ‘what is he doing?’ It was bin day. He forgot the bins and it’s just unforgivable to be honest.”

James confessed to have never missing bin day when he had a regular schedule, including his role on EastEnders. However, he blamed not working for his lack of knowing what day it was.

However, it turns out he had completely missed the bin he was intending to empty by a day with workers explaining his error to him as he tried to get the rubbish removed. “I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to forgive myself,” he joked before saying Victoria will be giving him a written warning for his mistake.

Victoria shared further details in the caption of the upload, saying: “It’s been a strange few weeks over here. We’ve kind of been in a weird no man’s land. Enjoying being together (for the most part) and appreciating the downtime before James starts his play but also, feeling a bit out of sorts too.”

She went on to say the feeling of unknown they’ve faced since his exit have felt a bit daunting, but promised to keep her followers updated with their goings-on. “Change can be uncomfortable,” she wrote. “Scary even. When you’re standing at the edge of something new, not knowing exactly what comes next…But I guess those can be the moments that shape us the most.”
