The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.

Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) sustained an injury to his head last week in Emmerdale, when John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) came up behind him and attacked him with a plank of wood.

John wasn’t planning on hitting Liam, it was simply a case of him being there at the wrong time. The evil man attempted to get revenge on Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), but knocked Liam out by mistake.

Despite the revenge not going the way he thought, John still managed to worm his way out of a difficult situation with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).

As word got round that Liam had been attacked, John jumped up and played the hero again, encouraging Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Aaron to give him space while he helped the GP.

In the aftermath, Chas immediately assumed that Ella Forster (Paula Lane) was responsible for the attack.

In tonight’s episode though, PC Swirling (Andy Moore) arrived with some important news that changed things entirely.

The officer informed Liam and Chas that Ella’s alibi is water-tight, and she therefore couldn’t have been in the village when the incident took place.

Chas wondered if Ella had organised someone else to hit Liam for her but with no CCTV or evidence, it was a bit of a d.e.a.d end.

With Ella in the clear, it has left Liam with a worrying conclusion – someone else attacked him that day, but who?

If he grows suspicious of John following their clash at the surgery, could Liam find himself in danger again?
