Shantol Jackson Opens Up About Her Return to D.e.a.t.h in Paradise and Her Thoughts on DI Mervin Wilson
Shantol Jackson Reveals Why She Came Back to D.e.a.t.h in Paradise
In a candid interview, D.e.a.t.h in Paradise star Shantol Jackson shared the heartfelt reasons behind her return to the BBC hit series, reprising her role as DS Naomi Thomas. Fans were thrilled when the show welcomed DI Mervin Wilson (played by Don Gilet) in late January, bringing fresh energy to the sunny Saint Marie. While the absence of Neville Parker (Ralf Little), who left after last season, left some gaps, the new episode still brought back familiar faces, including Jackson’s Naomi.
Joining the show in season 11 after JP Hooper’s (Tobi Bakare) departure, Jackson has found a unique place in the D.e.a.t.h in Paradise universe. The actress expressed her deep connection to the series, explaining that being a part of a long-standing Caribbean drama holds a special meaning for her. She said, “This show is a celebration of the Caribbean, and it’s a dream to speak in my own dialect on screen. The fact that I’m contributing to something that resonates so deeply with me is what truly brings me back.”
Her affection for the show is also rooted in her love for Guadeloupe, where much of D.e.a.t.h in Paradise is filmed, and for the cast and crew she works with. “The people, the island, the crew – there’s a beautiful harmony on set that makes every day a joy,” she continued. “I’m just so grateful to be part of this story.”
However, it’s not all smooth sailing for Naomi this season. The introduction of DI Mervin Wilson has shaken up the dynamic, especially in the early episodes. Jackson didn’t mince words when asked about Naomi’s initial impression of the new Detective Inspector. “Naomi thinks he’s rude, insensitive, and a bit impatient!” she admitted. “In the Christmas special, she and Darlene just want him to leave, but they both realize they need a Detective Inspector to keep the team running.”
Mervin, with his complaints about the island and sometimes abrasive attitude, certainly hasn’t made the best first impression on the team. Yet, despite the tension, Naomi recognizes his skills. “He’s very capable and intuitive,” Jackson revealed, hinting that Mervin’s journey on Saint Marie might have some twists ahead.
As the newest addition to the team, Mervin’s future on the island remains uncertain. Will he be able to overcome the frosty reception and gel with the other detectives? In the series opener, he’s tasked with solving the mysterious d.e.a.t.h of a young man found at the bottom of a ravine, along with a cryptic message he left behind. This investigation sets the tone for a series of thrilling episodes.
The next episode of D.e.a.t.h in Paradise brings even more drama, with a game show contestant being fatally stabbed during the finale. The bizarre twist? The victim is murdered mid-air while zip-lining. As the TV crew becomes a pool of suspects, Mervin surprises his colleagues by extending his stay on Saint Marie. But, as the drama unfolds, it becomes clear that Mervin has his own hidden agenda for prolonging his time on the island. In a surprising twist, Selwyn is revealed to have secrets of his own.
With so many twists and turns, it’s clear that D.e.a.t.h in Paradise has plenty more surprises in store. Don’t miss the next episode, airing Friday at 9 PM on BBC One.
