Strictly’s Kelvin Fletcher opens up about comparisons to Clarkson’s Farm

Actor Kelvin Fletcher is best known for playing the role of Andy Sugden in Emmerdale until he left in 2016.

Former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher has stated the major difference between his farming show and Jeremy Clarkson’s hit series Clarkson’s Farm. On Monday’s instalment of This Morning, the 40-year-old appeared live via videolink on his family farm alongside wife Liz Marslan.

He said: “Clarkson’s [Farm] is fantastic. Matt Baker’s as well, we’ve seen Our Yorkshire Farm, there’s so many shows like that. They all represent, it’s informative TV, it’s a sense of escapism.

“They’re all unique in their own way. Clarkson’s got a huge endeavour there, a massive commercial business and it’s hilarious as well. Whereas, this is just a little family farm, for us it’s all about living.”

The Strictly Come Dancing winner told hosts Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle that he and his family want to live off of the land. He went on to explain that they want to have a nice lifestyle with their children.

In 2021, Kelvin and Liz decided to buy a 120-acre plot of land to build their farm on for themselves and their children, Marnie, Milo, Maximus and Mateusz. Last year, they allowed cameras into their homes to follow the trials and tribulations of their new venture.

Elsewhere in the interview, Josie questioned what made them want to go into farming since their careers beforehand were extremely different.

The former soap star joked he gets asked this each day and still doesn’t have an explanation three years after buying his farm.

He added: “It’s funny how things came about, we were meant to move to California! But, the pandemic came.

“I think subconsciously we wanted a different way of life, I don’t know what we wanted, we just wanted something different.”

In their ITV series Fletchers’ Family Farm, people got to see an intimate insight into their newfound rural lifestyle.

Speaking about their decision to uproot and settle on a farm ahead of their series launching last year, Kelvin described their antics as doing the ‘unthinkable’

He said: “We haven’t come from farming backgrounds. We have literally taken a leap of faith and done the unthinkable and decided to uproot and move out to the middle of nowhere and start living off the land.

“As crazy as it sounds, that is exactly what we have done.”

From the lambing season, pig breeding, cattle markets, and opening their doors to the public, viewers got to see the highs and lows of farming.

Touching on running their farm and raising four children, Liz told Josie and Craig it was full-on and hectic.

She said: “It’s chaotic! As well as four kids who, I think are the biggest animals on the farm! It’s pretty crazy but we love it, we never look back.”
