Tyler Perry can’t escape Madea!

While promoting his new movie Duplicity on Good Morning America Tuesday, March 18, the multi-hyphenate star was asked about his iconic Madea character.

“I’m so sick of this old broad. What is it, damn it, what is it?!” joked Perry, 55, laughing.

He then went on to tease the upcoming Madea’s Destination Wedding, which will see him taking the character on a trip to the Bahamas — “If she can get out of the country,” he quipped.

“She’s a felon, so,” Perry added.

While Perry has become a prolific actor, writer, director and producer with a net worth of more than $1 billion, he will forever be known as the man who created (and portrayed) Mabel “Madea” Simmons, a brutally honest, rambunctious grandma. To date, Perry has played Madea in 12 films — most recently, in 2022’s A Madea Homecoming.

The filmmaker has toyed with the idea of hanging up the iconic character’s wig and wardrobe, but he eventually decided to keep Madea around because the American people “need to laugh,” as he said on his Instagram in 2021.

Perry also told Entertainment Weekly in January 2022 that becoming Madea again for Homecoming was akin to “putting on gloves.”

“I was looking at the state of the world and how polarized it is … nobody’s laughing. Nobody’s getting the chance to belly laugh anymore,” he said. “And I’m like, ‘What tool do I have in my arsenal that can bring that kind of laughter?’ “

Before fans see Madea again, though, Perry is set to release his mystery-drama flick Duplicity, starring Kat Graham, Meagan Tandy and Tyler Lepley.

“High-powered attorney Marley (Graham) faces her most personal case yet when she is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the shooting of her best friend Fela’s (Tandy) husband (Joshua Adeyeye),” an official synopsis reads.

“With the help of her boyfriend (Lepley) – a former-cop-turned-private-investigator – Marley’s search for what really happened leads her down a treacherous maze of deception and betrayal,” the synopsis concludes.

Tyler Perry’s Duplicity is streaming Thursday, March 20, on Prime Video
