Tyler Perry’s Divorced Sistas | Divorce, Drama & Accountability? What the Cast of “Divorce in the Black” Just Revealed!

Okay folks, so Rashida, Geneva, and Naomi—I’m calling them by their character names—just sat down for an interview on PIX11 News, and wow, it gave us some real insight into what this upcoming series is going to offer. I’ll drop the full link in the comments, but in the meantime, here are my key takeaways.

First off, Latoya mentioned something that really caught me off guard—in a good way. She said the sisterhood in the show holds each other accountable. Not just in relationships, but in life overall. Now, let me be real: in the Tyler Perry universe, especially the “sisterverse,” that’s not something we’ve seen much of. Too often, toxic behavior gets a pass, and the group just blindly supports whoever’s being messy. So if this new show truly gives us a circle of women who call each other out and actually grow together? That’s a game changer.

What’s more, we learned Rashida’s character is a first lady—yes, as in married to a pastor, played by Devon Franklin. That gave me instant flashbacks: Latoya played a preacher’s kid in The Preacher’s Kid and was also the mistress of a pastor in Greenleaf. So it’s interesting to see her on the other side of the pulpit this time around.

She also said something that confirmed one of my earlier theories: not all five women in the show are divorced. Despite the title Divorced in the Black, the group includes women in all different stages—some are married, some are freshly divorced, some are fighting exes over custody, and others are navigating the dating world again. That diversity in experience could really set the show apart.

A quick breakdown of the characters:

  • Naomi is described as bitter and impulsive—a real firecracker. Definitely giving Fatima meets Danni vibes.

  • Geneva seems like the one who “has it all together” on the outside, but behind closed doors, not so much. Classic “everything looks perfect until it crumbles” setup.

  • And then there’s the dynamic of the group itself. When asked if they’re friends or frenemies, the cast said… a bit of both. That’s going to add some real tension and complexity, which I’m here for.

What also stood out was the casting backstory. Latoya had never met Tyler Perry before sending in her audition tape. When it snowed in Houston and she couldn’t make the callback, Devon Franklin made a call to Tyler himself. She ended up meeting Tyler the day before filming started. Geneva’s actress, Gadine, said she was promised a role back in 2018 after her Bruh appearance—and here we are, 7 years later. That’s commitment and patience!

Honestly, this interview got me way more hyped than the actual promo teasers. The show sounds like it’s got depth, messiness, and—most importantly—character accountability. If it delivers on even half of what the cast promised, Divorced in the Black could be one of the more mature and emotionally grounded entries in the Tyler Perry TV universe.
