Tyler Perry’s House of Payne | Is Calvin Rushing Into Another Marriage To Prove A Point To Miranda?

You know, it’s been great going through the House of Payne video comment sections and seeing that people have really been doing their homework — going back and re-watching episodes from seasons 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. They’re picking out key scenes and making connections that actually make a lot of sense.

For example, I might be wrong, but I think the same episode where Calvin got a little freaky with Miranda while drunk was also the one where CJ, Malik, and Curtis were warning him: “Are you sure about getting married to Laura?” I believe Curtis even said he didn’t like her. What I do remember clearly is that everyone was trying to tell Calvin, “Look, you just finalized your divorce with Miranda. Why are you rushing into marriage again?”

That’s exactly what I’ve been saying from the beginning. We barely got to know Laura in Season 9 — the first season of the reboot. She only had a few appearances, and suddenly in the season finale, Calvin tells Miranda he plans to propose to her. Then, boom! Next season, they’re already engaged and planning a wedding that stretches over four seasons.

And sure, there have been obstacles. Mostly involving Miranda — her jealousy, her overstepping boundaries, and her lingering presence in Calvin’s life. But the big question still stands: Why is Calvin rushing into marriage again?

If I had to guess — and it’s just a guess — maybe it’s not about Laura specifically. Maybe Calvin just misses being married. Not necessarily to Miranda, but to the idea of marriage. Now, I can’t speak from experience — I’ve never been married — but I can kind of imagine what that’s like.

As a kid, I never wore jewelry or watches. But I remember getting a cool Rugrats watch from Burger King — I think it was from the Rugrats/Thornberrys crossover. I wore that thing to school for a few days, and when I stopped, it felt weird not having it on. Like something was missing. Maybe marriage is like that — a routine, a comfort, something you grow used to having.

And let’s not forget: that divorce between Calvin and Miranda was messy and drawn out. I’m not even sure it was fully finalized when the reboot started. Miranda, back then, was borderline obsessive. Always popping up at CJ and Janine’s or Curtis and Ella’s place, hoping to bump into Calvin. That version of her was hard to watch.

The continuity in those early reboot seasons? Terrible. Remember that episode — I think it was called From Heart to Heart — where Calvin and Miranda shared an intimate moment and kissed? Miranda said, “See? I knew you missed me.” And then… crickets. That moment was never brought up again.

In contrast, Season 13 and the current one have definitely improved in terms of continuity. But back then, it felt like they just threw scenes together without any long-term planning.

Now, back to Calvin and Laura. It really feels like Calvin rushed this engagement because he misses the status of being married — or maybe, just maybe, he wanted to prove something to Miranda. A kind of “Look what you gave up” situation. Miranda even told Janine that Calvin is now the man she wished he’d been during their marriage — earning six figures, more mature, more responsible.

And I get it — fans still want Calvin and Miranda back together. For a lot of people, no one else belongs on Calvin’s arm unless her last name is Payne. But if they had developed Laura’s character properly — let us really know her — maybe people would feel differently.

Instead, it just feels like Laura is a placeholder. A benchwarmer until Miranda takes her spot back.

So what do you think? Did Calvin rush things? Is this just a rebound that’s dragged on for four seasons? They got engaged at the end of Season 9 and are still planning the wedding. Meanwhile, Lisa was pregnant in episode 1 of the reboot and already gave birth at the end of Season 10. That baby’s been around three seasons now!

Laura and Calvin don’t seem any closer to marriage now than they were back then. And honestly, if they do get married the way things are now? A divorce could hit even faster than the one with Miranda.
